From the Investors Chronicle

Motability – this is a government scheme to allow disabled drivers to use their Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP) to fund the lease of a car adapted specifically for their requirements. In total, around X vehicles in the UK
are driven under this scheme and Vertu sells around 8,000 cars annually. This market has been expanding rapidly (up 65 per cent in 2023) due to a rebound in new car availabilityand improvements in the levels of benefits and contributions from the state. "

Answer below! Is there really that many motability vehicles on the road?

X= 700,000

Seems a lot but it's less than 2% of the vehicles on the road.

I remember at a training session 20 years ago being incredulous when someone tried to tell me that around 20% of the population has a disability. That's loads but they had the stats - I checked today and found this from the ONS.
In 2021, across both England and Wales, the proportion of disabled people was 17.8% (10.4 million). The proportion of people that are disabled has decreased 1.7 percentage points from 2011, when it was 19.5% (10.0 million).

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulation ... %20million).
I guess some of them will get the allowance and use it to buy cars. They better stay in their own spaces mind.

It's not (just) disabled drivers. I can think of two people with motability cars provided because they have a disabled child (I don't know how disabled because I never met the children). And I expect that might generalise to encompass other dependents.
