I haven't taken too much notice of this company but looked at it today and saw that the market cap was over $2 trillion. I understand they are working on artificial intelligence chips but I was wondering what these would actually be useful for?

NVIDIA’s Exclusive Chips for China Now Reported to be Available for Pre-Order, Priced Similar to Huawei Products

Mark Zuckerberg indicates Meta is spending billions of dollars on Nvidia AI chips

Amazon (AMZN): Building out its AI supercomputing clusters has made Amazon one of the top five Nvidia GPU customers.

etc.

The chips are specifically designed for artificial neural networks. Many AI developers previously used NVidia graphics chips (GPUs), as they are designed for parallel processing which is more suited for developing artificial neural networks, as opposed to general purpose CPUs. I don't know how long NVidia will maintain their current market leading position as other companies, such as Microsoft, are developing their own chips.

Up over 10% today on blowout earnings, $1,040 plus a share. This thing is a monster!

Nvidia's report has had a knock-on effect on my only technology share, Alphawave IP Group (+6.9% today).

It's British, specialises in designing chips which can copy with exceptionally high data transfer rates (apparantly essential for AI). Alphawave has a somewhat chequered past in part due to having to restate its 2022 accounts but its tech gets good reviews (it does a lot of work with ARM Holdings).

I bought a few of these about a month ago after talking with a friend's grandson who is seriously into AI (electrical engineering student, not a snowflake, owns a few Nvidia shares). Tech like this is outside my circle of competence, but since I recently decided to have a few investment "punts" I took the plunge. Up around 25% so far.

Investors Chronicle did a write up on Alphawave last week, classed it as "risky".

I would urge great caution with Alphawave. I used to work in the industry and there is just so much smoke and mirrors, I would be very careful. The whole thing is too opaque for me, so much so, I don’t care how good the numbers look. I had a discussion with someone on here about the company at the time of IPO. I understand the industry very well and this is a total punt IMHO.

All the best, Si
