Croatia recommendations ?

Visited Croatia last summer and want to go there again.

Aiming to hire a villa for a couple of weeks as a base. Would like to find a good location

- near a pretty town on the coast
- max 3 hours driving distance from Split (we would fly there)
- either on the mainland coast or island (quite happy to get a ferry there)
- our base should be a pretty coastal town or port .. not overun by package holiday tourists
- a pleasant place to stroll and find a selection of places to eat

LAst year we stayed at Rogoznica, which was great. Somewhere similar?

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I've only been to Sibenik and Zadar north of Split, both pleasant towns. Sibenik is less touted than Split and Dubrovnik, but has a nice old town with winding alleys. I should imagine there are nicer, more rustic places on the islands if you research it.

My advice would be that if you want to avoid hordes of grockles, don't go in the summer! I first went to Dubrovnik in a February, and wouldn't dream of going to such places in summer.

I'm quite a fan of Krk, as it's an island but accessible by road, so can be used as a base more easily than a 'genuine' island. Have stayed on Krk only in the sense of being on a yacht moored there, but should imagine that a combination of villa and hire car would work well.
