Pop up Windows Install Window - legit

#665123

Postby Clariman » May 21st, 2024, 5:28 pm

In the last month or so I've had a popup window appear on my Windows 11 system that appears to come out of the blue. It has probably happened about 4 times. It asks me to click on OK. So far I have just been closing the window (with x at top right) without clicking OK. Is this legit? What is Windows trying to do here? It looks as if something is trying to do a remote install but my PC is standalone - just connected to the Internet.

Checking for the above online....

gives this thread on microsoft answers

it involves downloading a msoft app called Autoruns from https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns

and then using this to remove an entry called msiexec.exe entry from the Logon tab there in Autoruns

The "why" this is happening is not entirely clear.
This is a bona fide Microsoft installer utility so I suspect "something" happened during an update (of the OS or a program) leaving the intention to launch this; seemingly without whatever it needs to complete its purpose and tidy up after itself.
