Splitting a Video (MP4) in Windows 11

#666294

Postby Clariman » May 28th, 2024, 5:02 pm

I have a large video file which I want to cut into 2 parts so that I can send them using WeTransfer. MS Clipchamp comes free with Windows 11 and the description of how to do it seem pretty straightforward but every time I try, it exports the full video. The split and export takes about 50 minutes each time, so I am wasting hours on this.

Is there another free tool that can do this for me? Or is there a Clipchamp step that I must be missing out?

Maddening.

Thanks
C

I use Shotcut. Brilliant program that lets you do a lot more than just splits. It's a bit of a learning curve but there's plenty of tips on youtube etc.

VLC will do it.... but quickly checking I think it might do it in real time :(

ffmpeg would be my choice if you're up for doing it on the command line

Copy it to a Mac (or IOS device).
Open in Quicktime Viewer (or Photos App).
Duplicate the video.
Trim the first half from one copy and save.
Trim the second half from the other copy and save.

Was pretty quick and easy when I tried.

GS
P.S. Or try the duplicate-and-trim trick in Clipchamp.

I recently needed to cut an mp4 into chunks and happily used Lossless Cut on Win10. Quick and easy with no challenges or problems - and nothing to learn or comprehend beyond doing what one would expect for such an operation (mark start and end of each chunk and save it).

To avooid any fuss or bother with installation and removal I simply downloaded and ran the PortableApps edition then deleted it after the job was done:

Cheers!

Actually, it's even quicker and easier if you don't care where the cuts occur:
File/Open source (or drag'n'drop)
Segments/Create num segments
specify number of equal length segments (default=2)
click Export button at bottom right
on resulting 'options' page click Export button at bottom right (again) and you're done a few seconds later.

IF that 'options' page displays a warning regarding 'thumbnail tracks' click on the underlined warning then, on the resulting page, click on the 'mjpeg' (or whatever) track to dim it (so it's excluded from export) and close that page before the final 'Export' click.

Quicker to do than for me to type.

Cheers!

Thanks for the recommendation JonE. It was 90% intuitive and far more straightforward than Clipchamp. However I have this niggling doubt that Clipchamp probably is simple but I'm just not getting it.
