Vinegar
We have a white toilet seat that catches the sun in a morning. We were going to get the plumber to replace it when someone suggested cleaning it with vinegar.
Two cleans and it's as good as new.

And that is a problem why .... ???

You'd get a plumber to replace a toilet seat?!? And why would cleaning it stop it catching the sun?!? Wouldn't blinds or curtains be better?
??????????????????????

Re: Vinegar
I find white vinegar very effective for descaling kettles, and wiping around showers and taps to remove limescale.

Re: Vinegar
A Belgian friend of mine was aghast when I said that the we put vinegar on our chips. Only known use was as a cleaning fluid. I had to explain the difference between white and malt vinegar. Had never heard of malt vinegar. Having been inveigled into trying it, now a convert.

If the sun does anything, it bleaches things white. So I'm not really sure what you are getting at here.

Depends on the material. In particular hard plastics often yellow quite rapidly in sunlight, more slowly in daylight without direct sunlight and the yellowing can penetrate the material.

Re: Vinegar
Soaking in white vinegar works pretty well on long-term encrusted showers and bath taps. (Our tenants are not always house-trained in such matters.) Otherwise we'd probably have had to resort to a chisel.
Did you ask him to explain why he slathered his chips with mayonnaise? I wouldn't like to think what it does to your arteries, but it doesn't work on limescale.

Sorry, should have added: It's pretty rubbish on toilet seats too.

Re: Vinegar
Mayo on chips/Frites in Germany/Belgium sounds disgusting....but it's actually very nice.
I couldn't get it out of my head that some 'pi55ed off with the Britishers German kitchen worker' had had his way with your grub though.
....Which kinda ruined the whole experience for me.

Ah, indeed it does. But the visuals of kettles and shower heads aren't so important, so a little trace of malty vinegar/chalky leftover doesn't really matter. Whereas, if the wife asks about the brown stain on the toilet seat.....

Re: Vinegar
You'd pay a plumber's callout charge to replace a seat?
No, I would have asked him to bring one the next time he serviced our boiler

I'd be amazed if any decent and busy boiler technician would lower him/herself to changing toilet seats!

Look after him then, he's a rare animal.
I have nothing written on my van. I don't need it, the internet sees to that. I'm 100% boiler fault-tracing and rushed off my feet. I doubt you'd be willing to pay me fees to change your bog seat!

Thanks, I'll try vinegar, we've always used citric acid.
