On second thoughts ' A friendly ear, possibly a helpful word or two"

Yes, that 'helping hand' has connotations I don't want to discuss.

Yes, I thought of 'sympathetic'. But occasionally someone might just need an ear to listen to them, sympathetic or not?? Really nice to see that this board has moved over to TLF.

Comfort Café was originally requested by Kimnhim but TMFPetrea posted up the idea about what the board was about here:

http://boards.fool.co.uk/wheres-kimnhim-6151696.aspx

From that post I quite like "Tea and sympathy" as a board description.

I don't think CC was ever somewhere that you expected to get a load of advice, but it was somewhere you could "off-load", somewhere you got a virtual shoulder to cry on, and maybe suggestions of somewhere to go to get more advice.

Inspired by that TMF post, hows about:

"A Helping Hand and a Listening Ear"

On later googling the above-suggested strapline, I came across the following blog:

Some nice reads in there?

Like "tea and a biscuit", but now I've got a mental picture of cup on a saucer with a severed ear where the biscuit should be. Maybe that's just my mind but I reckon that's not the image Comfort Cafe should have.

'A friendly ear' seems to have been adopted. It's as good as any I suppose.

Back to the original topic, it is great to have some one who will LISTEN and not keep interrupting with their own sad and miserable experiences. Rare to find a good listener and hope it is someone who will keep any private information to themselves and not spread it around. Cup of tea, some cake and a comfy seat, lighten the load. Good luck.

That's the nice thing about the anonymity of these boards - you can offload here about e.g. problems with your family or non-Foolish friends, without fear that they will see it and be offended.

I agree with your first point to an extent - some people do have a tendency to oneupmanship! But would add that sometimes, sharing experiences can be useful. I was recently surprised IRL when, having struggled on my own with a problem, someone whose public persona is somewhat brusque, ultra-capable, no-nonsense and frankly a bit uncaring, pulled me aside and shared that they had been through something similar. And made actually rather helpful suggestions of strategies that had worked for them. It was very much appreciated and I will look at them differently and with added respect in future, but it would never have occurred to me to seek their advice/support if they hadn't felt prompted to share.
