I've heard the name thrown around, but never thought about why it's called that.

Re: What are the origins of airbnb?
Interesting!
I read somewhere that the world's biggest hotel company doesn't own any hotels.
The world's biggest taxi company doesn't own any taxis.
The world's biggest retailer doesn't have any stores (not quite true now)
.... And so on.
There were others but I can't remember them at the moment.
I guess soon the world's biggest banks won't have any branches, andthe worlds biggest insurers won't have any offices.

My sons stayed at an Airbnb in Seoul, South Korea and were served breakfast by their (apparently charming) Korean hosts.
Ironically, considering that Airbnb started out in San Francisco, that city has imposed some of the tightest restrictions on hosts doing Airbnb of anywhere. For example requiring hosts to register, buy a license, pay a local 25% hotel tax and limit stays to 90 per year.
If I were still a landlord I would do only short-term lets.

self-service breakfast is quite common in my 100+ booking experiences. I'd much rather stay in someone's spare room than a cheap hotel.
