A pdf death record I want from 1900 seems to be available but it's £7. Not quite such good value but better than £11. Hmm, I wonder if it's worth bothering, not sure I'll get anything useful from it...

If I remember, that cheap £7 pdf version by email has been available for several years. I'm not entirely sure what the new options available are.

The mother's maiden name has always been shown in the Birth indexes as well as always having been shown on the full form birth certificate.

I did say...

Digital Images are only available for Births 1837-1922 and Deaths 1837-1887

These comments appear to apply to the English records. The Scottish version (accessed via Scotland's People) have been available with images of all entries for many years at a relatively modest cost.

5. What you will see on the digital image of the record
The digital image is an exact copy of the registration entry as provided in the register. As such, the image will not show all the details currently available on a certificate. An example of a digital image of a registration entry is shown below.

No. Not all civil registration records are held in a digital format. The Online View digital image service will only make the following records available for customers: Birth entries from 1837 up to 100 years ago and Death entries from 1837 to 1887

So there you are! What is new is that, for historical records of Births and Deaths, you can now see and download an image of the specific original written entry in the GRO central records, upon payment of a fee of £2.50.

Interesting - for the first time with GRO records, this appears to breach (at least for historical records) the pre-existing ruling forbidding direct examination of these records by anyone other than officers of the GRO in their duties. Of course you can only see the specific entry on the page, not the entire sheet (as you can with other jurisdictions).

Well excuse me but...

The thread tital is "GRO index images" - Whereas GRO "index images" (images of the GRO Indexes?) have been available for years, via the FreeBMD web site.

Maiden names have been available since 1911, according to the above Wikipedia article on the GRO records. They are also in the GRO Index and long form birth certificates. If this is, rather, a reference to historical entries - where would they now get maiden names from, if they were not on the original entry?

Perhaps it is just me, but I found the above to be reasonably confusing...

Anyway, one way or another, I now know what it is about. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

IMV, the most interesting thing here is this new development of allowing, albeit in a limited manner, direct viewing by the public of the GRO Register pages.

Maiden names from 1837 have been freely available on the GRO website for years...
