It is interesting to look at the National Grid system that shows power and its source:

At 15:12 on a beautifully sunny day the grid is 40.2% fossil and only 19.2% solar. If the costs of connection were waived presumably the solar component could go up. Sure this only works reliably for about 8-9 months of the year, but during this time could save a lot of gas.
