FindMyPast.co.uk free access
I've just had an email from findmypast.co.uk telling me they are offering free access to many of their records from today (12th January) to 15th January.
It includes UK census and BMD records, includingbparish records.
I've got a further generation back on one of my wife's lines using a baptism record for a known ancestor.
Good hunting!

I have an interesting conundrum regarding my ggfather, he appears in the 1851 census in Surrey, in the 1871 in Manchester, but where is he in 1861? Maybe I'll find out this weekend!

Married or not in each case?
If he is, do you know the marriage location? If not search for that.
Mind you, I have a ggg (maybe another g?) uncle who went to Australia and back with his family between 2 censuses. Clue was a kid born in Aus which led me to passenger lists to Aus where I found the family as in 1861 on the list for a ship arriving in Aus. Ten years later they were back in Cornwall with an additional kid, born in Aus.
And my G Granda and his brother had 2 trips to the USA for work.

I have solved several such conundrums through a bit of lateral thinking, such as searching for siblings, phoenetic/soundex name searches etc. and several are still missing, but as Slarti found, there is a possibility of overseas connections which I have yet to explore.

Thanks for all suggestions and interest, I don't want to lumber you with too much information, but the facts as I see them, are these, in
1851,ggfather or Henry, as his mum called him, was living with his widowed mother and siblings in Mitcham, by
1861, he was married with 2 daughters, both born in Surrey, late that year, another daughter arrived, again born in Surrey, the4 of them are all missing from census records, by
1871, all the family,as it then was, at home in Manchester, in
1881 he's at it again, all the children show up in Manchester, but no parents! Don't worry, eldest daughter is 22, they should be OK, mother is traced to her sister's in Mitcham, but Henry?? Maybe he's away on business, he was in the silk trade, so China??
The 3 daughters born in Surrey, suggest, to me, he didn't emigrate. Investigations continue......
Thanks for your interest,

Perhaps unlikely if he was married, but is there any possibility of military service?
My grandfather is missing from the 1901 census because he had joined up then fought in the Boer War before buying himself out a year or two before getting married.

Re: FindMyPast.co.uk free access
I'd never considered military service, but a man with a wife and family? Surely not..... unless he was trying to get away from them!
