Re: Who'd be Theresa?

She's our MP and it amazes me when you look at her schedule - House of Commons, Argentina, HoC, Whistlestop tour of Britain, HoC, Brussels etc - and then realise that not only does she seem to get home for church on Sundays but is in the local paper pretty much every week supporting her constituents...

Re: Should 'Fairytale of New York' be censored?

Just for clarity, the word that has been removed, was removed by the automatic filter that also changes a**e to Pink marshmallows. The removed word is often referred to as the N-word. I can still remember the over-zealous AOL email software in the 90s. Anybody writing about the murder of historical...

.... (So one might ask why it's a 'discount' at all? The answer is that it is basically one for the underwriters: they're guaranteeing that they'll supply the funds wanted by buying shares at the subscription price if no-one else will. Gengulphus TY. Something I'd pondered on in the past, but never...

Drive to arrive

Tootling along in my car, I keep seeing "Police speed check area" signs.

I'm amazed. They of all people should know what the maximum speed they should be doing is.

out of curtiosity... where would one send a christmas card to " a council client" ? a specified person? A department? didds Always a named person i.e. the person that I deal with. That's the point - it's a personal 'thank you'. People deal with people, however big the Company is. What the...

Re: Dying without a will

Something that Yorkshirelad1 touched on. Does the MiL openly support any charities? Could a child of the MiL approach said charity(ies) to see if they are part of Will Writing week and, if so, could the charity put MiL onto their mailing list for Will Writing week? A nudge from that direction might ...

'Tis the Season

There seems to be a veritable tsunami of Political Correctness going on at the moment, some justified and some carrying things a bit too far. We'd like to send out some Christmas cards this year that say (sharp intake of breath) "Merry Christmas" inside, with a decidedly Christmassy theme o...

[1 ] caveat : IIRC google (?) is starting to flag non https sites now as unsafe, which is NOT strictly true. Its only unsafe if there is unsafe informatioin being transmitted - see above It's stated it will also boost SEO rankings of Secure sites. Not by much as this 2014 report shows, but things m...

I did a double take when I saw the share price this morning, thinking they were connected as I hadn't seen the announcements yesterday.

A night at the Opera

I love a bit of Opera; so much passion and emotion stirs up in me, just like that scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts' character is overwhelmed by the music. It's a shame, then, when last night I went to see a new Tenor that friends were raving about. His singing left me cold and there was no ...

I quite often see signs locally advertising "Clairvoyant fair at such and such a venue". Well, if it really worked, they wouldn't need to advertise it would they? At least advertising clairvoyant events are better than cancelling them... "Medium and clairvoyant Andrew Beasley was due...

It looks pretty random, and the fact that there are quite a few attempting to reply to messages as guests suggests not very intelligent. Maybe a rather feeble attempt to spam the boards? Gengulphus Since phpBB is (one of) the biggest free BB software packages out there and since its settings can al...

Re: selling water at events/concerts etc

If you normally charge, say, £1 for a bottle of water, could you charge, say £1.50 for the bottle of water. 50p goes to a separate jar. Returned bottles are refunded 50p and put into a recycling bin. Any cash left over is donated to Water Aid or similar. Put signage up to that effect. You would sti...

Re: selling water at events/concerts etc

Around nine or ten years ago I was working the bar at womad festival at the Rivermead site. As I recall they were dispensing water in biodegradeable cellulose bottles, these looked identical to clear plastic bottles although they did feel slightly more flimsy and wouldn't survive many re-uses befor...

Yep 'S' for the keyboard answer, 'C' for the pattern. Not too taxing. but why should that be easier now than in the 1980s? Whatever one of the panel's jobs was, she was still writing out reports longhand at that point, so not a regular typewriter user and not familiar with row 2 of a keyboard. This ...
