Re: Suits you, Sir

New generation , new fashion. Not so long ago, and especially on TV , men had trousers 4-6 inches too long which made it look as if they had corrugated calves. You're part of the older generation if your trousers stop half an inch below the ankle bone. Fashions flare and die the death.

Brunel's original plan was to link Fishguard to Dover via London but lack of vision in others killed the idea. The Brunel Road to Southall then the line south across the M4 to link with the line at Brentford ,through Clapham to Waterloo ,raised to link through Waterloo East then London Bridge and on...

Does anyone remember "Whirligig " with Humphrey Lestocq and Mr Turnip? My most abiding memory of the time was watching Oxford's 8 sinking in the 1951 Boat Race as they negotiated the first bend. Today, the race is held when the Thames is like a mill pond . Takes all the fun out of it.

Mug punters will think they save more when they buy the vinyl LP at half price than they will on half priced CD or cassette.

Not many folk know that with German words the rule is " i before e say ee and e before i say aye ". Hence , we have " lieder" ( leeder) , songs or "leider" ( lider ) , unfortunately and "wieder" ( veeder ) , again or "weide" (vider) , pasture.

Watching the nooze over the weekend , they kept referring to Jerry Epsteen , which made me think the Theory of Relativity was the work of Albert Eensteen.

In Britain , his lawyers would argue that was cruel and unusual punishment , and contravene his human rights , so he would just get a fine of £300 , while the local ratepayers would get the bill for the cost of the clear up.

Re: Spelling and pronunciation

Misspelling , mispronunciation and redefining meanings are responsible for the modern vernacular moving away from English , so that the inaccurate is accepted as correct. 3 examples;- 1. Henge. Now pronounced with a hard "g" ( as in germ ) to refer to a stone circle, its original pronunciat...

I've always believed that Neil Armstrong fluffed his intended speech with a verbal aberration that can occur at a " once in a lifetime " moment.

Another example is Margaret Thatcher announcing " We are a grandmother ".

Apropos of DAB and FM radio , I like to Classic FM on the DAB with the analogue FM opposite , which gives a wonderful acoustic similar to being in a Piazza . Unfortunately, they each have different adverts so the result is cacophonous gibberish.

Conifers make wonderful cosy nesting sites for sparrows , but , unfortunately have no security , so one day I noticed a magpie raid a nest and prepare to make off with a naked nestling. Before he could leave , a crow swooped down and nabbed his booty from him. On another occasion , I watched as a ma...

Re: Not feeling so old after all!

A simple guide , to compare body age to chronological age , is to divide your waist measurement by your upper thigh measurement , then subtract 1 and multiply by 100. This gives your body age.

The theory is that the more inches round the waist and fewer round the thigh puts more strain on the heart.

Re: Short call to arms - vote for Boris Johnson

Before there was VAT we had Purchase Tax. In 1955 you could buy a Morris Oxford for £595 plus PT of £249 , equivalent to a VAT rate of 42.5% and a vacuum cleaner for £7.10.00 plus £3. 3. 11d PT. The average wage was £500 - £600 a YEAR.

There would be riots if VAT was doubled today.

Electroplesia would serve as a one -word description , but given the modern obsession with verbosity ( using several words rather than one ) , will be rarely used.

Surely the verb " to ferry " is transitive in that it needs another object to act upon , rather than reflexive i.e. able to act on oneself. Can commuters ferry themselves to and from work each day?
