Re: Musk endeavours

BobbyD If they are producing 330k BEV's what does it matter what proportion of their total output that makes up? Could you explain how they are going to keep their crown in China without selling BEV's out there? Because it illustrates that VW are not aiming to go BEV, just to make enough to keep th...

Re: Musk endeavours

VW have a factory which they believe will have a capacity of 330,000 BEV cars per year, but don't expect to use all of it for their cars. So at best this represents 330,000/10,000,000 = 3.3% BEV out of total capacity. It is a token effort designed to look good to regulators & politicians with cl...

Re: Musk endeavours

Obviously JLR aren't a big player in electric cars yet and their CEO will have an angle to promote, but what he says in this article is an interesting view of the future. He makes the point that in the UK there is a need to improve the charging infrastructure to encourage motorists to switch to ele...

Re: Musk endeavours

onthemove When driving we're balancing our judgements based on a reasonable expectation of the behaviour of those around us, rather than always accommodating the worst case possibility. In reality AD cars will have to make similar such balances... but not any more so than already done by human driv...

Re: Musk endeavours

Anyone of you peeps read this? Musk gets a really bad press. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/08/how-elon-musk-gambled-tesla-to-save-solarcity?inline Perhaps you have heard it all before, but it doesn't sound good. Always money in feeding the folk who loathe Musk and no matter what someone does...

Re: Musk endeavours

onthemove Summary... All the technology needed to produce an AD car now exists, and has been proven to a degree. The challenge now is pulling it all together into the most appropriate complete system. It's no longer "if" but "when". I agree, except that I am still uncertain if a...

Re: Musk endeavours

BobbyD In this case it was to do with your supervisor confusing his mental model of the experiment with the actual experiment. Which is exactly my point. Comparing AD to Chess or Go, or even NLHE is indulging in exactly the same fallacy as your professor. You are taking a 'clean' conceptual model a...

Re: Musk endeavours

BobbyD This makes them incredibly bad comparisons for driving a car in the real world, which is a game of very limited information, unlimited players with unlimited properties, and rules, the most solid of which are optional on a good day, and even then subservient to greater principles like not ru...

Re: Musk endeavours

Arguments used to predict that computers could not become invincible in chess & Go, were often about how much more complex is the human brain than a machine, but those arguments were wrong. There may indeed be reasons why a computer can not drive better than a human, as we have covered before o...

Re: Musk endeavours

It looks more likely to me that autonomous vehicles will be restricted to certain roads, from which normal vehicles will be excluded. How society and democracy & capitalism works

Tim Uber of (waitbutwhy) is doing a series on how society and democracy works, how it was created and why based on examples from the US, but which apply equally here. I have found it quite interesting, setting how the rational for how the carrot is used in our society rather than the gun in a dictat...

Imho the Ap is not far away from being able to navigate UK roads, but to be useable it will also need to learn how to deal with roundabouts and junctions, the former unknown in the US and the latter very different. Re: Musk endeavours

This short video does show the many flaws in autopilot. Particularly the propensity for the car to want to hit cars and vans parked at the side of the road. And at one point to accelerate to illegal speeds. I can't see how anyone would use autopilot on UK roads. The driver is having to compensate f...
