Quite the turnaround for the PMs and PM equities today. Gold rose about 3% and silver was up 2%, and the PM shares I looked at (FRES, HL, CDE, ABX, NEM) generally gained 6-7%.

IMV the cause of the drop is more likely to be Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's "we're a long way from neutral" comment on interest rates. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/03/powell-says-were-a-long-way-from-neutral-on-interest-rates.html Real estate is nothing if not a rate-sensitive sector. SGRO...

Regrettably, I must confess to having recently seen Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors for the first time. Even worse, I liked it. (The casting of Martin Landau and Jerry Orbach as brothers was a great idea, IMV.) I realise that this makes me a terrible person.

The Federal Reserve raised rates again yesterday, but IMV the Fed's statement and rate forecasts were positive for gold. Firstly, the Fed dropped the "accommodative" language from its statement, indicating that the Fed Funds rate is nearing what is viewed as the neutral level. Secondly, th...

Re: Indivior Finals

Another big drop for INDV today, after the company issued new FY18 revenue and income guidance yesterday. The stock is down about 60% this year, mainly due to concerns about competition from generics after generic versions of INDV's Suboxone Film treatment for opioid use received U.S. approval in Ju...

Re: Card Factory (CARD)

So they're continuing to pay out a special dividend while increasing their debt? I don't get it. CARD's net debt as of 31 July was higher compared with the year-earlier level, but lower compared with the level at 31 January, when the most recent fiscal year ended. So it could be viewed as an increa...

I really hope BAT refrain from trying to spin his departure as the culmination of a successful time running the business. Agreed that BATS has been a lousy performer in capital terms in the past year, but I am not convinced that this is unique to the company or to Durante as an individual. Looking ...

Re: Card Factory (CARD)

Nothing much to cheer us up there. Taking the current very tough conditions for store-based UK retailers into consideration, the results struck me as being about as good as could be expected. CARD's operating profit rose 18%; the underlying business seems to be performing well (i.e. record sales fo...

Re: Card Factory (CARD)

CARD's interims are out, and at first glance it looks like a bit of a mixed bag. The special divi is 5 pence a share - in other words, at the bottom of the range projected beforehand by the company. On the other hand, CARD is sticking to its profit forecast this time and not guiding lower.

Turkey, Vanguard and Gold

More testing times in the gold market, with the price down about 7.5% since the end of May and dipping below $1,200 an ounce in August. However, I wonder whether it might be the case that a pair of one-off events - the Turkish currency crisis and Vanguard's reorganisation of a precious metals fund -...

Feeling rather relieved that I sold my SSE shares last month. There were just too many question marks around this one for me, at both company and sector levels. I bought the stock in September 2009 and topped up in May 2010.

My understanding is that the Commitments of Traders figures are not viewed as being particularly reliable as a market timing indicator. In any case, it all feels a bit falling knife-ish at the moment for precious metals equities, with GDX trading below its 5-day and 15-day moving averages. It's inte...
