Re: Capital Losses

What do you mean by "before I blow this year's allowance"? Perhaps you meant before you exceed the current year's allowance. Yes that's right. I could have phrased it better. I wouldn't be happy with myself if I exceeded this year's allowance thinking that I had losses brought forward to ...

Re: Capital Losses

Further to this I have reported capital losses to be carried forward on my self assessment in previous years. I am now in the situation where I am thinking of selling assets this tax year which will generate capital gains in excess of this year's CGT allowance. My question is...is it possible to ver...

Re: SQN Asset Finance Income Fund (SQN)

I hold a reasonably large chunk (for me) long term for the dividends and am tempted to buy more at this price but won't. The last published NAV was c95p as at 30 June. What I fear is an announcement stating that they are reducing the monthly dividend. I know from the half year report issued in March...

Very helpful RNS from Burford announcing changes to its listing, board and CFO, share price bouncing: https://www.investegate.co.uk/burford-capital-ltd/bur/statement-re-governance-changes/201908151538582369J/?fe=1&utm_source=FE%20Investegate%20Alerts&utm_medium=Email&utm_content=Announce...

Re: Burford Capital Limited (BUR)

I also did not do enough due diligence because I only found out yesterday that the CFO is not a qualified accountant and is married to the CEO, both of which I am particularly unhappy about. Ditto. IMO the CFO does not come over very well on the conference call, she should be all over every number ...

Re: Proportion of bonds to shares?

Its noteworthy that if interest rates continue to fall, even to more extreme negative yields in some currencies, you can make large capital gains from holding long dated bonds, even if this is counter intuitive, due to bond convexity. This article explains this: https://portfoliocharts.com/2019/05/2...

Re: Hargreaves Lansdown & Woodford

I guess it depends what you mean by financial reliability , from the point of view of their platform, or as an investment in themselves? Dod I mean as regards their platform, as I use them for the bulk of my and my family's investments. I really don't want to have to worry about reallocating to oth...

Re: Hargreaves Lansdown & Woodford

This has changed my opinion of HL. Frankly I do not believe some of the statements made in their press release linked below. As Dod101 alludes to there seems to be a commercial angle to the selection of funds rather than purely future performance potential, particularly it seems after they excluded ...

Re: Hargreaves Lansdown & Woodford

Turn of phrase...I know its not a bank.

Just to clarify, the reason for the post was to comment on the impact on HL (where I hold most of my investments) of Woodford, not Woodford per se.

Hargreaves Lansdown & Woodford

I see Hargreaves Lansdown took a beating today, down 4.5%, presumably on the back of Neil Woodford's woes as he has closed his flagship Equity Income fund to redemptions and HL was its main cheerleader with reportedly a third of its AUM owned by investors on its platform: https://moneyweek.com/50830...

Strangely no RNS issued relating to these results yet? I heard about them on the radio.

Re: Fundsmith - Terry Smith commentary.

Each monthly factsheet lists the top 10 holdings in order. You can derive the remainder from the earlier factsheets where they talk about purchases/sales and top 10s. Here is my analysis of the holdings from the Feb factsheet (top 10 in order of size, others in no particular order). I update it each...

Re: Fundsmith - Terry Smith commentary.

Terry Smith's commentary on Facebook was interesting. He views the regulatory threat as a benefit in that whilst it may increase costs somewhat it puts up huge barriers to entry for competitors, an analogy to the tobacco sector being made.

Hargreaves Lansdown site problems

I use Google Chrome as the browser for everything on my computer. On Friday last week I was unable to get the login page for Hargreaves Lansdown to display and called them about it. They said that there had been a system change and many people who used Chrome had called in with the same problem. I w...

Re: Use of Spread Betting

A different use case, but I use spread betting as there is a software interface to the IG website (IG Labs), this allows me to do automated day trading. This would not normally be possible as I have a full time day job. The spread is wider, but as there are no broker fees, stamp duty or occasionall...
