Re: BitDefender remorse

Ah, the last figures I'd seen for useage were from early January. Plus I don't see how they can be correct as many places I used to go had numbers of machines not connected to the internet where upgrades had never happened and never would, because what they were controlling only worked with that ve...

Re: Wheel Alignment

Is there a way to know for sure if your tracking has been done? I took my car for a wheel Alignment today and as it was busy I left the car with them and went for a walk with the dog. When I got back the guy said to bring it back in about 3 weeks for them to check that it hasn’t sprung back. I didn...

Re: How to compress jpg image

I wish to compress a jpg image from 4MB to 100KB approx without reducing the dimensions. When I use MS Paint I keep reducing the dimensions so the image is too small. DAK how to do this? You might also consider a file compression program such as the one built into Windows or 7-zip which offers more...

IFA Conduct

I mentioned in another topic that I've been trying to help a friend who has made a number of unfortunate 'investments' that have a very bad smell about them. One investment was in Paulownia trees in Panama... It seems that my friend was recommended to invest in the Paulownia scheme by his IFA. His I...

Re: OneDrive: Problem and Solution

As I previously noted I have a W10 PC with a tiny SSD so I keep my stuff in OneDrive's cloud storage and use the "download on demand" feature whenever I want to work on or just view a file. So do I understand you correctly, your only copy of your stuff is on somebody else's computer? :sho...

The Necessity of Virtue

I came across Jordan Peterson, a Canadian psychologist who seems to be 'having a moment' right now, thanks to one of my sons who said that he was popular with some of his fellow university students. I thought it would be interesting to see what was attracting some of them to his lectures, and having...

Surely cable provides current to the sockets and a flexible lead (or flex) connects the plug to the device? :)

Re: BT 5 hub/router upgrade

Mine's a Huawei (BT5)... Really? There are two variants of the Hub 5, Type A with Lantiq chipset (ECI), and Type B with Broadcom. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BT_Smart_Hub#Models_and_technical_specifications Lantiq is Taiwanese and Broadcom is US-based. As for the OP's question, the link above has...

Re: BT 5 hub/router upgrade

I will be most grateful for any advice as to whether I should upgrade my BT 5 hub/router. I have had it for (I think) five or six years. It has been pretty reliable, but I don’t know whether there are up-to-date security features on a BT 6 router. TIA Jon Mine's a Huawei (BT5) and I'm sure that has...

Re: Middle-aged spread and hypothyroidism

My goal wasn't to starve my body, though I learned to cope better with hunger than I had done before. I also learned that it's possible to survive on a budget of less than £2/week at today's prices. As for the waistline, it didn't shrink in that time, but neither has it grown since then as I've bec...

Re: Middle-aged spread and hypothyroidism

Just to put a counter-view to "eat less". Last time I was in extreme poverty - 2002/2003 - I was down to one meal a day. Value-line pasta and pulses, with at best (as an indulgence) flavoursome but more expensive ingredients like onion, tomato, mushrooms. I was also walking long distances...

Re: Let iot snow, let it snow, let it snow

The road outside my house got covered in a layer of hail a couple of nights ago. I was just sitting here in my night-time attire minding my own business and reading the LF when there were a couple of loud bangs outside. The first bang was caused by a car hitting my garden wall and the second bang wa...

Re: Middle-aged spread and hypothyroidism

. I think Dr. Michael Mosley is due to talk about the benefits of the 18:6 diet in his next series and I think it makes a lot of sense for other aspects of health apart from weight loss. Hmm.. 18:6 diet - not heard of that so I shall look it up - thanks. https://inews.co.uk/news/health/michael-mosl...

Re: Middle-aged spread and hypothyroidism

Any tips for a man approaching 50 to reduce his waistline? I do nibble (especially at leftovers) so if anyone knows of any ways I can mentally tell myself not to nibble, or tell myself it's ok to throw that cake away if it's going out of date, I would be very appreciative. I HATE FEELING HUNGRY AND...

Yes, it's brilliant! I think we've had about 2 very short outages in 3 years. The speed (78Mbps) is absolutely consistent according to speed tests. We had about 2.5Mbps before fibre. I hope you enjoy it :D

Epigenetics - changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself. RC eg. 'Diet and the epigenome' https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-05778-1 RC Bit more understandable account here: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/31/science/dutc...

I think the scientists here are barking up the wrong tree, in fact I could have left the "up the wrong tree" bit out altogether. Have our genes change radically in a generation? Epigenetics - changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the gene...

Re: Skinny Genes

No, I don't think there's a contradiction. Obesity obviously is caused by eating more calories than those burnt but I'm suggesting that the cause of eating too much is mainly genetic. RC Except that's not obviously what causes obesity, is it? How about lipodema, for example? Many, many women think ...
