Re: Reference Library?

It seems to me that it would be helpful to have a reference point to which people can be directed to obtain the required information rather than have a @War and Peace' contribution, as Mel has referred to these posts. Dod Please don't pretend to quote me and misuse my comment - I was very specifica...

Re: Language

I tend to think you'll never offend someone by *not* swearing, where you might offend, or turn away, someone by swearing. So why do the latter?

I say that as a very sweary person myself. I can manage to avoid it on here, mainly, and without feeling worse off for it

Re: Moderators fiddling

If you're replying on a phone it's really difficult to do selective quotes, especially if there are a number of embedded ones - far easier to hit the " button and let the software do it (and let a mod tidy up later  ). I did happen to see the post referred to - it was about the same length...

Re: Radiators

Thanks B - that site doesn't have the right combination either. I was thinking I would give up, but the problem with that is that I still need to replace the rad that is behind the side board, if I replace it with a traditional one but smaller, I can know the btu of the one I buy but have no idea of...

Is it in anyway related to the person who, earlier in the year outed themselves as a self confessed Troll?

It's not that poster.

Re: Radiators

It's a very small house, I can stand in either room and see all three radiators so yes, they need to be the same style. I don't have thermal valves. Do they come standard on new ones then? Or is this something I need to investigate separately? They are not something I have ever had or used, just use...

Re: Radiators

Another important aspect with radiators is that their efficiency is very dependent on the ability of air to circulate round them, thus putting a sofa or a sideboard (does anyone have them these days? BH Um, it is my placement of my sideboard that means I need to change the rad for a smaller one! Cu...

Re: Deleted thread

I hesitate to add more confusion, but if it is such an issue to delete all references to a user, would it be possible to leave everything in place but change the username with a mass find-and-replace process? From, for example, "kiloran" to "Ex-Userxxx" where xxx is just a seria...

Re: Deleted thread

Clariman says posts are removed manually. I have made over 4,000 posts. How long would that take him? That is not 100% correct. Perhaps what I wrote was not clear. A user's ID and posts can be removed in their entirety in a straightforward way. Where it becomes manual, is checking everywhere that t...

Re: Deleted thread

Surely the real idea is that it will start a process whereby you will be gradually forgotten. For example there were some prolific posters on TMF who did not migrate over here and I have mostly forgotten about them, or recall them but can't recall their TMF name. One can gradually disappear in that...

Re: Deleted thread

I didn't say anything about "as time permits". I am aware of the timeframes required, I didn't happen to mention them. Yes, I used the informal description. If you want to know the full GDPR details I'm happy to provide them. But you're right, it does not involve performing brain surgery t...

Re: Autism

Not sure if it was urban legend or not, but some big American software companies went on autism recruitment drives, not only employing the autistic workers but "minders" trained to cope with their idiosyncracies and (basically) shielding them from the "everyday stuff" that they ...

Re: Autism

No surprises really that someone who is going to have difficulty with fuzzy stuff like communication/interpersonal relations should go into a career that does not rely on them - in fact the digital nature (on/off, the program does exactly what it is programmed to do etc) is a real turn on. Meatyfoo...

Re: Radiators

Thank you, I'll keep the B&Q ones in mind. I went in there yesterday* and had a quick look and they only seemed to sell vertical anything. So I didn't hang around in that area. Their website is awful and they are not good value (though I get 7% discount through work). I'm not 100% keen on the ga...

Re: Deleted thread

A poster has previously had all their posts, including quotes, removed. It didn't seem to be a big deal but I'm not sure how it was done. As well as the points made, this is a data protection issue. If someone's username can be shown to be linked to their own details (as I believe mine can, for exam...

Re: Is this a racist joke?

So if I make Jewish jokes in the presence of my Jewish friend and they tell me they are offended but I deem that they are just being over sensitive, is that OK? The opposite of that would be that anyone can elect to be offended by anything and we all have to accept that no matter how bizarre and ex...

Re: Is this a racist joke?

Back in the days of the cold war, everybody had a nation which was the button of their jokes. We had the Irish. The Americans had the Poles, as did the Russians. The Poles had the Egyptians. And so on. The Jews have the Arabs, who no doubt have their own. It still goes on and will do until the end ...
