Re: Losing the faith - should I just sell and move to funds (Poor Performance / Renationalisation)

Not at all. The market as a whole has gone down. My HYP has fallen more than the market in the last few weeks. Buying as the market falls is better than selling. You never completed the exercise, and you certainly didn't hold for long enough to make a judgement. Just look and it is probable that any...

I think it is time you two stopped this private tiff and took it off-line. There are several points of contention, but none are worth this extended argument.

Put your toys back in your respective prams, kiss and make up, or there will be tears before bedtime.

Re: Dividend zoning ("danger zones" etc) e.g. as previously explored by Luniversal

Its implicit in the doctrine that 12-15 shares/sectors is enough diversification. I've never seen an advocate of HYP claim that it is riskier than a tracker. Critics, yes. Advocates, no. Do you have any examples where this has been stated? Other things being equal 12-15 shares would be more risky, ...

Methyl Ethyl Ketone is a good solvent, use a small paint brush to apply it sparingly.

Re: Losing the faith - should I just sell and move to funds (Poor Performance / Renationalisation)

Before we go any further with this though, can I please ask a related question - If you've got some investment capital that you wish to deploy as part of your income-portfolio, and you're whittled down to a short-list of let's say three options, none of which you've owned before, what general 'hist...

You should probably only use HYP if you don't need to :D Hehheh how true. What with wonky Sturdies and faded Dividend Champions, reaching for yield has cost me a lot of money. Fortunately, we have a lot of money and a lot of spare income. Our portfolio income as a whole has been saved by my Fixed I...

Assuming that next years interim is reduced, pro rata to the reduction in Final, the yield on the rights issue will be about 6%, and I intend to take it up in full.

FWIW, I had a nice meal yesterday in a relatively new Marston's pub, the Conqueror's March in Hastings, just off the Ridge.

It confimrs my feeling that they are worth holding on to.

Topped up BT Group pls BT.A

I added to my holding of BT.A this morning at 201.99p by 16.7%. I was being wary, because of the MKS rights issue, which I plan to take up in full, and this purchase will allow me to do so from accumulated dividends in my account by the time they will be called for. This brings BT.A to just over my ...

Re: Losing the faith - should I just sell and move to funds (Poor Performance / Renationalisation)

... The idea here was that one might simplify the portfolio by selling at either end, getting rid of both the lower yield shares and those with very high yields, to end up with a 20-share portfolio. That might be too indiscriminate, so looking at sectors, to ensure that one kept some of each, could...

I still remember fondly the days of Katie Boyle saying "Hello Monaco. Quelle est la vote du Jury Monégasque?", Followed by the inevitable "Norvege null points". Happy days before they let the riff-raff in.

Re: Losing the faith - should I just sell and move to funds (Poor Performance / Renationalisation)

It's odd. All my spreadsheets for individual companies have a column "yield on cost" for each dividend. I don't remember why I included it in the first place, but it features in every one. I was just looking at National Grid, which came to me as a results of having bought British Gas, as a...

Re: Equity release or downsize

I echo the various reservations about equity release. One thing you might like to consider is that single level living becomes more attractive as you get older. Coming down stairs gets more difficult, let along going up. A stair lift would solve that, of course. Decent care homes seem to run at over...

Re: Make your own simple hands-off investment with limited funds available?

There are very few new investors, starting out in their 40s, for whom a high risk 100% equity portfolio would be appropriate. It's the only way they will learn. When you have been through a few bear markets, you become immune to the rises and falls. You soon learn that each time there is a fall in ...

It's fairly straightforward. There will be a perio...

Equal weighting would be my choice. TJH There is simply no logic to investing the same amount of capital into Shell as into Thomas Cook. All you are doing is giving a portfolio a bias to small caps and a higher risk profile. You are investing in companies, not collecting stamps. That assumes that t...
