Re: phones with compass

It isn't true! Just tried with my phone (with the Do Not Disturb at the default settings) and not a peep from the phone when a WhatsApp message is received. All that happens is you get the on-screen display pop up with a notification. Previous posts by production100 and Arborbridge enlighten the is...

Re: phones with compass

Yes my phone is always turned on, and no it never disturbs me a night; why would it? I have Android's 'Do not disturb' setting turned on so it automatically silences itself at night. As has already been pointed, neither you nor I will be disturbed BECAUSE WE DO NOT USE WHATSAPP! Some people do. Pos...

Re: Fantasy

I can't seem to find them anywhere apart from ebay though. Haven't read any of the newer Myth books with a co-author, so no idea on them. LouP I remebered that one of those co-authors was Jody Lynn Nye. I too didn't read the co-authored works, but did read this series by her. https://www.goodreads....

Re: Fantasy

I've enjoyed some Robert Aspirin books. Perhaps closer to Douglas Adams than to Terry Pratchett, but somewhere in the middle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phule%27s_Company_(series) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythAdventures I can't seem to find them anywhere apart from ebay though. Re: phones with compass

I'm not in a position to judge what people do and I guess you aren't either, though in my case the phone is turned off everynight. Why would I want to leave it on? - it never occurred to me not to turn something off which I am not using. Is that terribly old fashioned? In the same way that I turn t...

Re: Fantasy

Does it really have to be "funny"? I ask because there are many comfortable reads that are not doom and despondancy, nor epic tales of high drama. Ok, I'll admit that it's easy to poke the fun at romanitc fiction, be it Fantasy, SF or just a pot boiler. However in my experience there are f...

Re: Scam 'phone call alerts

Plain UK numbers are 10 characters long. I recently had a recorded message call from a number starting 00144 which was 15 characters long. Are there any legitimate phone numbers of that length? Yes, 00 is the code for an out of country call. This is followed by the country code and then the number ...

Simple answer. NO! More complicate answer. Yes but they are not identical. Ok let's see if I can suggest some Jasper Fford has produced some great books and the great "Thursday Next" series. Book 1, The Eyre Affair. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/27003.The_Eyre_Affair Or the Nursery c...

Re: Fast laptop required

I thought I'd post an advertising* Youtube link for the T440s. Don't try this with any old laptop! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0U5n2WaMMHo (I love the close ups that show the two streams from the drain holes) Oh BTW, you will find similar videos that are not produced by the manufacturer. Of cour...

Re: Fast laptop required

Apart from all the reservations raised over heat and power requirements, my daughter does not have a good track record when it comes to looking after computers. It would be fairly devastating if she wrecked a £1500 laptop! Can I recommend a second hand T430 or T440 thinkpad. I posted elsewhere on T...

Re: Fast laptop required

Thanks for all the comments. My daughter is using Google's machine learning software, TensorFlow. She may well go on to use other ML software, but they are all similar in requirements, typically utilising NVIDIA GPUs for the matrix arithmetic. She has a desktop at university and does not really wan...

MARS are down 5.6% as I type. I've had a look around and can't see why? Could just be noise I know, but any opinions out there on this? I hold in my HYP, and am not selling. Ian. It could be that you are looking in the wrong places and expecting logic rather than sentiment to drive the price. Phil ...

Re: MAKE A BACKUP!

In answer to StepOne, yes and you are doing it. A "back up" is a copy, of what you want to keep and nothing more. Of course there is no need to copy the things that you don't mind losing. Also if you know that there exist copies of the things you value, then you may not need to do anything...

Re: MAKE A BACKUP!

Glad to here that folks know and have many methods of backing up. I have used Macrium reflect, Clonezilla, Paragon, Ghost and others in the past. Reasons not to backup to the cloud include privacy. Reasons to backup to the cloud include the likes of a house fire. Now all I have to do is convince my ...

MAKE A BACKUP!

ARGH! Some 12 months ago my daughters laptop failed. She had no copies of anything that she stored on it. Oh well, it was just the charging circuitry (or possibly just the DC jack). I purchased the same model off ebay and swaped the keyboard (the new one had a Dutch keyboard), the memory (she had ex...

Re: Bone conducting headphones?

Are you talking about bone conducting headphones or a bone conducting hearing aid. Both exist and both work. Indeed I think that the hearing aids came first. I distinctly remember as a young man, decades ago, being surprised to find that the hair band that the old lady I was talking to was a hearing...

Re: Replacement seal for a bottle trap?

I think that you have made the right decision to replace the trap. Mine sometimes leaks, but it's from the joint where the trap connects to the waste pipe. I recommend though that you search for gasket replacements for the new trap while you have it and the one that you are removing when you have th...

Re: Refurbished Desktop

All in all I don't think this system owes me anything and I'm happy to spend whatever is required on an updated system Reconditioned is very competetively priced so I can afford better kit and still not break the bank. I've looked on Amazon renew and something with an i5 processor, 250GB/500GB SSD,...

Re: Prosperity without economic growth?

Well it really depends upon what you mean by "growth" and "prosper". By the way recycling is currently hugely important and prevelant with certain resources. Any new product made from either lead or gold is likely to mostly consist of recycled material. Glass, copper and aluminiu...
