Re: Sludge grey

My car has been sludge grey for a long time,
But I think it was silver when I bought it.

Maybe its time to wash it.

Re: Counting traffic

It might be that traffic information is required as part of planning, if someone is trying to put a new estate of houses off that stretch of road.

Or if there has been accidents involving traffic coming out of driveways when passing traffic is not observing speed limit change

Re: Getting the kids started in computing.

I would second the CamJam kit - one with temperature sensor, not just buttons & LEDs The other thing to consider would be a cheap arduino clone. Its not a fully blown computer you can connect keyboard & mouse to Its more electronics based and you connect it to a usb port on your pc But I fin...

Re: samsung galaxy j320fn battery

It could really be a battery problem it its a couple of years old. Batteries are usually rated for 500+ recharge cycles Usually you can pick up a replacement for £5-10 on ebay etc. But it could also be one or more apps that are badly written and running constantly in the background. Some devices hav...

Re: Finding Windows Live Mail for download - Win10-64bit?

You might want to look at other email tools like thunderbird What follows isn't helpful, I'm just having a rant: It all seems like microsoft is pushing everyone to a 'subscription model' of windows, so you have to pay again every year. That's what they are stinging companies with (Office 365) compar...

Re: £152,005 p.a. - for just £1

I like to think that if someone pulled that trick they would need to have paperwork to prove they made 'best attempts' to run the place if the limited company folds.

Not sure you would make enough from it to fund a 'run away to another country and hide' strategy.

Re: Anyone with a Honor mobile phone?

Our Honor rollcall is: Honor 6A for my daughter last year & that's doing fine Honor 9 Lite for christmas & he seems pleased with that Then I decided to try a different Chinese phone & got a Redmi 6 & so far I'm quite happy with that too. I would have preferred phones with replaceable...

Re: E bike recommendation

Just to wade in to several bits of discussion on here: Quite a few years ago I encountered discussion on best wheel sizes & efficiencies. My original feeling was that big wheels = more efficient - but apparently its nothing like that. Bigger wheels = heavier & more angular momentum and e-bik...

Re: My guilty secret(s)

I'm still trying to get round to freecycling: My wifes old Mixte sports bike she has has since she was about 12 & has since been used by my son for CX & me as a spare bike to leave at work for lunchtime sojourns if the weather is nice. My old road bike (I bought it from my brother when mine ...

Re: E bike recommendation

You can find light weight e-bikes with narrower tyres (although if you were so concerned you would probably want to swap the manufacturer supplied tyres to you favorite brand anyway) BUT: These are really expensive. So the majority of e-bikes you see are the ones build at low cost with heavy steel f...

Re: MS Access or open-source database

If you want to learn how to make a database & query it with SQL commands (rather than just do the job quickly with excel) You could look at sqlite3 Its open source & even built in to android phones. There are several free apps that give you a better user experience than just using the comman...

Re: Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Coding and Robots for Kids

I would second arduinos as much easier and simpler to understand & get started with. They do come in various sizes. I got a starter kit with 20+ sensors & bits from AliExpress (if you don't mind the wait) for less than £20 I also ordered a smaller 'mini' type board that I can plug into the b...

Re: When do you expect to buy your first electric car?

As we run 2 cars (one each) the only reason not to replace one with electric would be the cost. I'm not in a position to buy new. But then the problems would be: 1) is the car tied in to a battery lease - which by my calculation makes it more expensive than diesel at the moment 2) if 2nd hand - how ...

Re: South Manchester cannot decide to sell or rent

Depends on your view & situation. Currently have BTL with no mortgage. Had it 20 years now, got in early. So now if I sold it, we would have a big CGT bill So we keep it as: 1) its a cash cow. 2) it gives us somewhere to send the kids to, as I don't want them living at home when we retire & ...

When I tried hiding the SSID from snooping google streetview cars, all I got was complaints that half the devices in the house stopped connecting to the internet.
It wasn't just limited to Apple devices, it hit some android phones/tablets & the samsung smart TV too

Re: Has the market finally peaked? - anecdotal

I don't think I can confirm that. But my theory is based on monthly cost: If you have 1K a month to spend on housing - then that either pays 1K rent or a variable amount of mortgage depending on the current interest rates. If interest rates are low(like now) - then that 1K can service a lot of debt ...

Re: Hair highlights

I am not sure you can do it 'alone', from what I see, you would need someone to apply it for you. How else will you know if the bits you can't see are correct or not & won't make a left/right error in the mirror & end up with stuff in the wrong place. As for applying the dye, the Mrs has don...

I'm not sure about the original reason for getting a new 'inkjet' printer. All 3 of my kids have been more than happy to use our old Dell 1320C colour laser through their schooling. Never been a problem. Middle one is now doing photography A level - but I would expect him to use the College printer(...

You guys have mentioned both GiffGaff and Tesco Mobile. (I use GiffGaff too as I get free calls to other GiffGaff users because the rest of the family are on it) Did you know that both of them are powered by O2, so the coverage will be the same. And don't expect to get good coverage everywhere. It v...
