Re: phones with compass

My Hauwei p20 has a working compass. I guess the Chinese need it to know where I am when spying on me.

Re: Youtube

Youtube has become my go-to for fixing computers, bikes, cars and odd things around the house. Some things will require pros, but it is amazing how much you can do yourself with a resource like that.

Re: How to stop my computer moving or deleting my text

I use a remote wireless mouse in conjunction with my laptop, on a mouse mat. Yes, I got that bit. But if like most laptops, it has a trackpad under your wrists when you're typing, that may still be active and causing your problem. If you drag your wrist/heel of your palm across it you'll highlight ...

Re: How to stop my computer moving or deleting my text

Are your moving your hand across the trackpad while typing? I lay my hands flat across the keyboard and its a problem I have too. But fixable by using an external mouse, which you are, and then ensuring the trackpad is switched off in settings.

upgrade process

Hi A friend has asked me to upgrade her drive to solid state, and upgrade her computer from W7 to W10. What are the steps involved, software-wise? I've upgraded to W10, and have changed disks, but not both at the same time. Do I need to start the upgrade (download to USB) then swap drives, then star...

So long Plusnet, where next

Having wasted over an hour not getting through to Plusnet to have my price hike reviewed, it's time to move on. Technically, it has been fine, but any company that takes over 40 minutes to deal with a customer enquiry is not doing its job properly. So... who next? Talk Talk is out of the question, b...

I'm reading this on my Android phone right now. Don't think there is a TLF app available.

fault diagnosis

Hello Up-front confession: I'm not a car person. That should be evident from the fact I drive a 2002 Rover 25. The problem I have is that the battery is running flat, and the battery/alternator light on the dash has gone from flashing intermittently to staying on full-time. I've taken to charging th...

Re: Farewell Section 21???

Now that's the kind of abusive practice they should indeed stop. If you need to sell the property, you sell to another landlord (or to your tenant, if interested). If you have a problem with that, you're not fit to be a landlord. Er, why? You're presuming an static market of BTL, where rental prope...

Re: move from phone contract to payg

I got the new SIM, canceled my old contract and asked for a PAC code to move the number. Take care with the order in which you do this. It's worth some preliminary research for the networks that may be involved. There was a time when you could, on certain networks, only port in a number when orderi...

windows folder layout

I have a number of folders that contain voice recordings from interviews in mp3 format. Windows, in an almost Apple-like disregard for my preferences, sees that the folder is full of mp3s, and decides it must be a record and thus changes the file detail columns to track number, artist, album etc. Bu...

Re: move from phone contract to payg

So, if I'm reading that right, I can send one text every six months and keep my number alive for a total of £0.04 a year?
Sounds like a result. Thank you.

move from phone contract to payg

I have an old T-mobile phone contract that costs me about 12.50 a month. I've had the number for about 15 years, but in the past few years I've had a work mobile that has become my default number. But I've always wanted to keep the T-Mo one for the odd person that may have that number and not my wor...

Re: And in the darkness bind them?

Can I put in a plug for Aviva? Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with a SIPP. SIPP's are great, but often more effort than many want to put in. Aviva offer a great degree of flexibilty, but restrict you to funds rather than allowing you to bet £XYZ on a small company that offers games devel...

And in the darkness bind them?

My other half has a series of small pensions from previous employers and is considering moving them to her current employer's pension scheme. One is a defined benefit pension that won't be touched. But there are a couple of sub 15K funds and one c.30k fund. Her current pension is run through Aviva, ...

Re: Dentists

One advantage of an NHS dentist is that they carry out a range of procedures that are known to be good for dental health. However a private dentist is not so constrained, and may recommend expensive cosmetic dentistry which has little or no merit from the point of view of dental health. I believe t...

Re: Do I really need a fast processor?

Adding machines? What were they? Those strange machines usually operated by attractive young ladies in offices? The adding machines I was using 50 years ago were made by Addo and featured a manual crank on the side of the plastic-shrouded body which printed the input value on the tally roll or, if ...

Re: Brexit and house prices

Pure speculation. Don't talk the market up. We've never been in this sort of political and economic uncertainty before, even during the recession. You can't change the facts.......there's a bloody great crisis looming and fewer people able to buy and interest rates are rising. Onwards and downwards...
