Re: A strategy for Remain to win

Our FPTP system rewards a certain amount of geographic concentration of votes. If you come second in a lot of places all those votes are wasted. How many other elections can you name where a party won the popular vote in England and lost the seat count, let alone lost it so dramatically? {/quote] 1...

Re: A strategy for Remain to win

Labour got a lot larger share of the English vote than the Tories in 1997 and 2001. They did get a smaller share of that vote than the Conservatives in 2005 but it was pretty close (and as you stated they still managed to get 92 more seats in England). That to me is the outrage, not a mitigating fa...

Re: A strategy for Remain to win

This was already debunked little more than a week ago. Blair won all his general elections carrying a majority in England. A majority of what? More English voters voted Tory than Labour in 2005. Labour won 92 more English seats than the Tories in 2005. Labour got a lot larger share of the English v...

Re: Brexit all over?

Since this is an investment site this will probably be of interest to most here https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jun/26/no-deal-brexit-could-trigger-flurry-of-profit-warnings-say-accountants Crashing out of the EU at Halloween could result in a “flurry of profit warnings” from publicly list...

Re: Brexit poll - what will happen on/by 31st Oct

I see from the poll that we have a couple of people still believing in the GATT 24 approach (even if in this instance on an agreed basis). As Richard North notes even if the EU were for some reason inclined to go down that path there are a few problems http://eureferendum.com/default.aspx Yet, back ...

Re: Brexit poll - what will happen on/by 31st Oct

My expectation is that Boris will win the internal Conservative "election" and set off to Brussels to push the EU into changing the agreement just enough to allow him to claim victory (Trump style). But the Prime ministers of Europe will announce that as the UK has not, and is not, making...

Labour bosses rigged election analysis to block full backing for second Brexit referendum, deputy leader Tom Watson claims 'The summary section that was leaked to the media bore little relation to the evidence of the main report - instead, it was a series of assertions based on no evidence' - https...

Re: Mark Field

Well, it is pellucid that Urso started off this thread of proofless claims. I was just responding to Howyoudoin's guess for which he had no proof that people's perception of whether excessive force was used was partly the product of their left-right political views with my own guess that that perce...

Re: The Brexit Party

Only the extremists believe a 'hard' Brexit is even possible (and desirable) and they wish to turn England into a Zimbabwe format and take the profits. They have already succeeded in destroying much of the decency and tolerance that existed in the UK three years ago. The idea that people who are ha...

Point of order! Whence cometh these pellucid insights into the nature of all ' Persons of the Left '? ;) My comment was merely intended as tongue in cheek to demonstrate the pointlessness of the post I was quoting. Another vote for pellucid as word of the day :) Well, it is pellucid that Urso start...

Re: Tory Leadership candidates

The whole incident seems a bit strange. Police are called, don't want to take the recorded evidence of the neighbour, then the police deny they were ever there until they realise the Guardian has proof they were there, and only then do they admit it. Then at this afternoon's hustings, rather than s...

I’m in Italy at the moment and catching up with news. I haven’t read the whole thread but can I just guess that most of the people who thought he used excessive force are left leaning politically and most of those who thought he used reasonable force are right leaning? Has anyone that posted on thi...

Re: Mark Field

Have to agree. If you gatecrash a private event and attempt to disrupt it, then you accept the risk of a violent ejection and potential injury. The protesters should have engaged in a peaceful picket outside the event. Not sure why Field resigned. John Prescott didn't when he punched a protester an...

Re: Mark Field

In 90% of the countries on earth, anyone storming an event attended by the govt 2ic would die in a hail of bullets. I think Mr Field's response was pretty restrained by comparison. What if she had a knife, or a gun, or acid? We'd all be praising his actions as he lay in his hospital bed. She is an ...

Brecon and Radnorshire by-election after Tory MP recalled

A recall petition against convicted Conservative MP Chris Davies has succeeded meaning there will be a by-election in his constituency. This could be bad news for the Conservatives with their small parliamentary majority (including the DUP) being at risk of shrinking further. The seat was held by th...

Carney dismisses Boris' GATT 24 claim

Finally a high profile figure has dismissed the brexiteer's GATT 24 claim and the MSM have picked up on it. With some luck maybe that claim will now disappear from future brexit discussions. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/jun/21/brexit-mark-carney-dismisses-boris-johnson-trade-claim-on-no...

Re: The Conservatives and Momentum - 2 sides of the same coin?

Oh yeah? Free speech you say? One word. Rats. Not loving the thread title: Framing the Conservatives (a mild if ineffectual bunch) alongside Momentum (usually displaying the worst of British Marxist class envy mixed with Stalinist attitudes towards autonomy of speech and thought). But it's my right...
