Re: Sainsbury (J) (SBRY)

In mid 2014 I did myself a note about retailers in general and resolved not to hold them again. I had sold Sainsbury in January 2014 at £3.709, a good sale it would seem. For the CMA to block a merger seems unusual. Surely they would normally allow it subject to certain conditions. That would seem t...

Re: Solskjær appointed interim Man Utd Manager

To all those doubters of Solskjaer it looks as if they could be right, and he needs to do a Fergie and let the prima donnas know that no player is bigger than the club. I hope that De Gea stays but his contract needs sorting and he probably needs to rest, but Pogba has to go and Matic is pretty well...

Re: Travel insurance clause question - flights limit

I took a one trip only cover in the winter to cover me on a trip to the Far East. First you give an overall limit which would normally be the total cost of the trip (in your case presumably air fares plus maybe getting to and from airports). Then the cover is in my case anyway is a) If I am unable t...

Re: Aviva (AV.)

I don't think I said anything like that about Aviva, but this particular situation is not that unusual if someone feels they have been passed over. The Finance Director of HSBC left and joined I think Glaxo when he did not get the top job there, although it was all done in a much smoother way. I see...

Re: Travel insurance clause question - flights limit

There is so much that you have not told us that I do not think that you will get a definitive answer. I have always found travel insurers to be quite helpful and I think you need to put your questions to them. For instance why would you need replacement flights anyway? What you quote sounds to me li...

Most of these will be free of IHT as well, since most fall under the pension rules such that the trustees who hold the SIPP have complete discretion as to where the proceeds will go. Normally they will take heed take of the Letter of Wishes and act accordingly. Every holder of a SIPP should check th...

And if anyone is interested, there is an excellent exhibition in the new Singapore Science Museum with a fascinating couple of lectures he gave whilst on a visit to a New Zealand Uni (I forget which). I spent a wonderful 3 hours or so there when I was in Singapore a couple of months ago. They may we...

Tulloch is an internal appointment and Andy Briggs came with the purchase of Friends Provident. I would guess that Briggs is p****d off with the way things have gone and there is an attempt to do some face saving but it has not worked out very well.

b) the church has failed in its core duty to redeem them I am no at all sure that it is the church's 'core duty to redeem them'. It is a self appointed duty if that and so they could easily be flexible about it. Still, I do not think I could visualise the church ever ex communicating a murderer sin...

Re: Galliford Try ( GFRD) profit warning

Yes Arb but you are confusing two issues. I was responding to the discussions about the internal procedures of a company such as Galliford Try. Those with detailed experience of how such firms go about arriving at tenders and their monitoring procedures thereafter were giving their experiences which...

Re: Galliford Try ( GFRD) profit warning

I do not feel any need to know how they work internally - that is for the Board to determine - any more than I need to know how say HSBC determines their lending criteria. I am concerned only about the financial outcome, and it has not been very inspiring for many contractors for quite a long while....

Re: My April Top ups.

Last I heard, it was relocating from the Channel Islands in order to become a fully-fledged UK REIT as opposed to the Channel Island equivalent. Not heard much about that recently, but I think it is still going ahead. Slightly off topic but the latest half year report tells us that it moved its tax...

Re: My April Top ups.

There's a good chance of an increase in dividend in the next 12 months, and a 4.6% yield which is just enough to make me stay. All three supermarkets are likely to give me an RPI uplift (or more for Tesco), so that degree of lacklustre I can put up with for the moment. I see very little in the supe...

Re: Ferry interesting

To answer the specific question, I would say that the act of 'ferrying' is a service to others, and I would not use the word in connection with taking the ferryboat back across the river simply on a return trip without anyone/thing on board except for the pilot or ferryman. To me at any rate, ferryi...

Perhaps my infamy with Dod101 makes me less famous in view of recent events. However to improve matters Solksjaer has asked the Board for £200m for new players. He may well turn things around but his past record places me firmly in the sceptical camp where I have always been. I was thinking about y...

Strangely enough international contracting seems to do better. I do not know why. I am very sorry to upset his no doubt well intentioned professionalis...

I think 28.2 degrees from East would mean south from East since measurements are usually clockwise. But I am no expert. Does Mr Google help?

Re: Galliford Try ( GFRD) profit warning

The main warning sign for me is that GT is a contractor. Shunning contractors means that I have avoided the various problems in that sector. And that is a perfectly serious statement. Contractors are bad news and will remain so even if they tighten up a bit in the short term. No doubt they will reve...

Re: What went wrong with the Boeing 737 Max

Surely the 737Max should never have passed muster. Boeing deliberately weakened what we might call its fly ability and compensated for that with the MACS software. That is completely crazy. Obviously the 737 fuselage was built for certain engines and those only. And what is more no one in the US wan...
