Re: British American Tobacco (BATS)

That sounds draconian to say the least. What is the point if they are not banning 'real' cigarettes? Of course they may have all but banned tem already. Ironically I assume San Francisco is the sort of place where drugs of various forms (as long as they are not tobacco or apparently tobacco substitu...

Small holding here, too. Used to be a large holding... If you want to be a Millionaire, become a Billionaire and buy shares in BT Interesting there was a broker upgrade on Vodafone to buy with a target price of £240, I bet there are a few of us hoping they know something we do not. Re: Southern Water

Presumably they have to publish or at least file accounts, even as a private company. Surely the way to punish them is for the CEO to be fined personally, or remove the franchise from the company and get other investors in to run it. Maybe require these utilities to be PLCs, or heaven forbid, nation...

Re: BT Group down over 3% today.

BT [imho] is a waste of time and space from an investment point of view. Whether that is down to the Government or to the regulator I do not know. It is though, best to keep clear of utilities of most sorts because they need regulating and few regulators at least over the long term are concerned abo...

Re: Facebook's currency: Implications for Banking

The latter are curencies not backed by the state. LET's are a local exchange currency supported by local traders. Crypto currencies are supported* by their users/investors. Libra is backed by Facebook.. That was part of my reason for asking because I do not think that the Libra is going to be 'back...

Re: Facebook's currency: Implications for Banking

I have not really followed this but is the Libra to be linked to any recognised currency or is it going to set its own level based presumably on supply and demand (like the Bitcoin?) If so how is its supply to be controlled?

So I've started to look at Maccy Ds. Got to fulfill Buffett's criteria of being a business that I can understand, right? [However for MacDonalds we see two entries on page 26: [1] Interest expense-net of capitalized interest of $15.5, $15.9 and $14.0 521.90 [2] Nonoperating (income) expense...

Bouleversee. Yes I will just leave them undisturbed to continue to roll up, mainly because I can see nothing better to do with the cash. Mind you 5% would be pretty good! However I see them as the ultimate fall back should the worse happen and feel quite comfortable with them sitting in the backgrou...

Re: Sharesoc hates us

Ok then what are you doing about it? I am quite prepared to raise teleconferencing at AGM's which I attend but it will never be the same as actually coming along to a meeting. I do not like your opinion ' Nonsense' in response to my view that where we live is up to us because for as long as I have l...

I thInk that geographic inaccessibility is up to the individual. Teleconferencing is something else but I guess for the average AGM it would be unnecessary and for all I know expensive. How many shareholders would be bothered anyway?

Re: Sharesoc hates us

Why do Scottish companies have their AGMs in Scotland? Like Alliance Trust in Dundee, for example. I have the honour to be, Sir, your obedient servant, TJH Because that is where the company is based. Just as Unilever PLC tends to hold its meetings in London. Alliance is not a very good example beca...

Re: HYP Buying For End of Oct

Well I am fully invested in respect of the funds I have allocated for investment. The four years of expenditure is actually a deliberate allocation in N S & I Index linkers, asset management if you like. They are to my mind too valuable to sell and the reason it is so much is that the income fro...

Re: Sharesoc hates us

Re the venue of Exeter, I suspect that it is rather more inconvenient for me as I live an hour or so north of Edinburgh. Inaccessibility is a relative term. As it is, I have to travel to London for most AGMs if I want to be there. That usually means an overnight there as well so I could complain abo...

Of course, if Sharesoc aspired to inclusiveness, they would be campaigning for online attendance to be facilitated for all shareholder meetings of listed companies, instead of bemoaning someone else getting a turn at the high table. Actually, UE, they are and have for a long time been , together wi...

No, the real point is 'Bankruptcy for attempting to represent yourself in Court.......' I do wish posters would get their spelling correct. On the case, it would seem that both parties were to blame. The cyclist cannot just plough into a crowd of people and a pedestrian should take care where they w...

Just gone through the Annual Report. As was said earlier, a good set of results and I must say I like their policy of finding new well connected directors. Mrs Fitzalan Howard is a case in point. She appears to be from the Schroder family but is now married into the aristocracy with a very good pedi...

I do not understand why people seem to rely on third party websites such as Morningstar or HL. Go to the original numbers in the Annual Reports or Half yearly reports and if necessary to the monthly factsheets. Very straightforward really. Liquidity is not an issue with investment trusts, at least i...

I am inclined to agree with Charlottesquare and what I thought as well when I read about it. Just because the lights are in your favour it does not mean that you have the right to plough on through whoever is in your way. I think that must have been in the judges thoughts. I see this often, both as ...
