Re: Words of wisdom

The only one that is at all serious is

Never, ever, trust people who say ''Trust me''.

I'd go along with that.

Re: Prince William ‘worried’ about Harry’s mental health

Indeed. But that is not how the world (or at least our Royalty) works. Obviously the second son of the Monarch-to-be can do what he likes with virtually unrestricted funds. No point in bleating to the world's press as he should know. Marry who he likes but then keep a low profile as he will never be...

Re: Prince William ‘worried’ about Harry’s mental health

I can't say I am worried about Harry's mental health. He of anyone is surely in a position to get the best treatment. I think though that marrying Megan was not necessarily the best idea. That, simply because of her background and so on, will not make things any easier for him. William seems to have...

Re: Starting an income growth pf

For capital preservation, I'd go with Capital Gearing Trust - designed to preserve capital! And it turns out, has been a quite reasonable performer over a long time. You won't (often) get the double-digit returns from high-tech growth stocks that we've seen over the last few years, but then chances...

I think you may be too UK centric or at least Euro centric. I would add Murray International and Henderson Far East. Both decent yields and international exposure.

Re: Selling Unilever?

Hi Dod, Well your tolerance for the volatility of equities greatly exceeds mine, ULVR now down ~15% off its high. Looking at a chart for ULVR I couldn’t help notice that the price peaked pretty much exactly when the GBP was at its lowest and fell significantly after that with its recent recovery to...

Re: Credit Card Inaction

Thanks for the replies. I've been told, by phone, that MBNA are taking up to 45 days to resolve Thomas Cook refunds. Given the supposed volume, I can appreciate that, but of course time is money and big companies are never in a rush to meet their commitments. Furthermore, apart from automated email...

. . . you’ve been on holiday with a family aged 1 to 71 who have never been on holiday abroad before. Those who have seen my other thread about those who give most will understand where I’m coming from. For people who live in Crimea, it’s not easy to move about, mostly because of the average wage, ...

Re: Selling Unilever?

As Pref must know no share goes upwards in a straight line, not upwards for ever. It has fallen back over the last few weeks but that is hardly surprising. I took some profits at £50 so I am perfectly happy with it, although it amuses me that we have such discussion about Unilever on this High Yield...

Re: Second Hand Goods

Depends on what it is and how much in demand it is. A few years ago I tried to sell a fairly new £700 flat screen tv (not a flat panel, an older style one with a big back on it). To my dismay, eBay sellers had them at thirty quid and they weren't selling at that. Off to the recycling centre it went...

[Agreed, there will be some swings and roundabouts and the effect on current holdings might broadly balance out. However, I'm focusing on any new buys or (more likely) imminent top ups . Ok, Unilever might not be not be High Yield but I'm not really debating this, I'm putting forward the considerat...

Re: Alliance Trust Savings taken over by Interactive Investor

That is an interesting but clunky system on the separate thread. I think like most, I have a problem in that income from dividends fluctuates wildly from one month to the next and so I do not/am not able to set up one fixed amount. I will simply operate the transfer myself but you would think that I...

In summary I think the answer to the last two posts is no and no. I finally established that with II your dividends can accumulate for as long as you like but when you want some or all of that accumulated cash you have to go in to the website and instruct that however much of the accumulated you wan...

I will probably not keep up my tracking of expenses for ever but I certainly find it interesting to see where my money goes. Well I ain't no toff but if I were too diffident to give in the street I sure as 'ell would be too diffident to meet those benefiting from my generosity. Over a life time I have no ideas how much I have given away. Certainly no where near one million sterling that's for sure, not yet anyway. I suppo...
