Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

What Gengulphus has said in some detail reflects more or less my concerns. In my email to the Unilever Chairman I made the very point about no discernible cost savings, at least if there were any one would expect those to be spelled out in the documents. Neither has there been any discussion about t...

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

If I am selling of course it is much more convenient to do as you suggest but I am not a trader and usually a sale will be a considered move. Dod That could be taken as a "slight" to those of us with nominee accounts, as it implies that Bree or myself do not make "considered moves&qu...

Re: Plans for March

I run a two year old Audi and have no intention whatever of getting rid of it. Why should I when by the logic of Howard, it will most likely increase in value if the price of a new one will rise? I am too old now to do much about physically moving my residence and will just carry on, but Corbyn is a...

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

Of course the other point is that I have held the certificated shares for a long while and so CGT also is a consideration. It's quite straightforward to transfer paper certificates to nominee holdings. Print off forms for each share and send them to the Broker with the certificate. If you need or w...

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

[ But doesn't that mean that you are getting clobbered for a lot of income tax, that you wouldn't have to pay if they were held in an ISA? Yes it does but despite my best efforts, I still have about 30% by value of my total holdings in certificates. I transfer the max value into an ISA most years. ...

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

Thanks Bree I had not noticed that. I hold my shares in certificated form and I rather like that. I do not want to be forced down a nominee route. Another reason for rejecting this proposal. Come to think of it though, this is just a sign of things to come because I think there is a proposal to dema...

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

I at least was not writing about the current management over the 90 years since the merger. I think that is obvious. I am referring to the whole culture of Unilever which is long term and conservative as far as I can see. Obviously businesses change over 90 years and they have always made clear that...

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

Arb (Warning to mods. this is not particularly HYP) I do like family controlled companies but I do not hold many at the moment. Just sold ABF. Going nowhere. Mucklow and Henry Boot might just about pass muster as HYP shares and are family controlled. Caledonia and RIT are of course ITs and outside o...

Re: Well Salzburg seemed to go well ...

I like most of the Europeans but the way things are working at the moment shows the difference in our legal systems and our attitudes to life.

We should respect each other but at the same time recognise that we are very different. Great to get out of this web of bureaucracy and deceit.

Re: Well Salzburg seemed to go well ...

Do you really think that Jo Public really understands all the implications of Brexit (any more than I do?) They wanted out - remember?

And the stock market had its best day for a while.

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

I would like to say I don't actually think Unilever management have done that good a job. Given the basket of brand etc it's a company that just about any muppet could run. As Peter Lynch said "Invest in businesses any idiot could run because someday one will." Unilever is a good example ...

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

The joy of actually being on the register via a certificated holding. I simply sent off my forms voting down the proposals. I could also have done it online. I have also emailed the Chairman of Unilever and the Leverhulme Trust, urging the Trust to vote down the proposals. Ian You must do what you f...

I must say that I thought Mrs M's speech was good. It may not make any difference but at least she at last said what needed to be said. Makes me glad we are leaving. Who the heck do these EU leaders think they are? Dod Yes how dare those nasty EU politicians not give us what we want and instead pri...

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

Unilever has made the Withholding tax a company concern because they know that without some protection from it the PLC holders would be most unlikely to back any merger. Turkeys do not normally vote for Christmas to use a hackneyed metaphor.

Re: Unilever - SIMPLIFICATION OF UNILEVER'S CORPORATE STRUCTURE

So, what's the fuss about? Pyad seems to have the clearest comment, and maybe I should take his interjection as crucial. Not sure what you mean by crucial but pyad is I think altogether too complacent. Given his following on this Board (deserved or otherwise) it is verging on the irresponsible. The...

[Not quite sure how you can say you missed out on Fundsmith ? It is an open ended OEIC and just as easy or even easier to invest in than it was at launch. I am not sure that there is anything to suggest that Smithson will necessarily be a better buy now than Fundsmith other than possibly the small ...

My idea would be to go to Samoa via New Zealand, and not go there direct but a gentle amble there. Security does not seem to be an issue there but I do not know. I only want three nights there. It may never happen of course.

Thanks for the comments re the Ukraine.

Re: ISA and delisted shares

In fact the Liquidation of London and St Lawrence took to the initial payout well under a year. I then got two further very small amounts as things progressed. The last payout was maybe a couple of years down the line. If there is no litigation pending, then the winding up process for an investment ...
