Re: Dry November

TP2 That's great to hear because most people can avoid later onset diabetes with, as you have done, proper control and exercise. My first wife was insulin dependent from the age of about 4 and of course had a regime forced on her. She lived until just under 60 and so it infuriates me when I see peop...

Re: FRCL at a Premium!

I do wish we would all stop writing in code. I think the OP can rest assured that we are not exactly in an over heated market. Investment trust shares go to a premium from time to time and also to a discount as investment sentiment waxes and wanes on particular trust shares. On TJH's point, for Alli...

Re: The Tobaccos

A suitably political message which does not change anything. If we are not concerned about the capital values, then tobacco shares ought to be Ok for some time yet as income stocks, but I will not I think be adding to my holdings. I think I have enough already anyway.

Re: Cabinet agrees Brexit agreement

I think that in the end some form of the deal agreed yesterday is still the most likely result. I think all those MPs who are enjoying their day in the sun will find that they will soon lose public support. The public must recognise that no deal will please everyone and will be getting fed up of all...

Re: Cabinet agrees Brexit agreement

Actually I have just been listening to the news. May is between the proverbial rock and a hard place and no matter what she does it seems that there will be a self indulgent number of MPs who will disagree. The country said they wanted out; that is what remainers, MPs and others seem to have forgott...

Re: Faulty Bathroom Who is responsible

Interesting that because I had a similar situation with another shower manufacturer and they sent their own rep to take a look and eventually solve the problem. I think they wanted to preserve their reputation. What may or may not be the strict legal situation does not always apply. The installer is...

Re: 'With profits' funds

Does this sound at least moderately sensible or am I missing something What you are proposing sounds to me like a sensible way forward, especially as you have the 4% guarantee (presumably tax free) FWIW, the Phoenix, sadly for bungeejumper, was never a very good life insurer/investor with built in ...

Thanks. It must be well over 25 years since I have been to Tai O. We had a company bungalow on Lantau and a vehicle so at one time knew the Island vey well, but it is a long time ago. Enjoy!

Good heavens, I thought this thread was about Brexit. Is Kaliningrad not the Konigsberg of old? The one of the five bridges problem? Very interesting to Herr Euler but what has it got to do with Brexit?

Re: British Land Half Yearly

Does anyone else see the futility in using hard earned profits to buy back shares, whilst simulataneously securing new debt? Why not just put the cash in the kitty and save the financing costs? It is called financial engineering and for a property company may be no bad thing. Depends of course on t...

Hi Grumpi

I was being rather flippant. I hope your recovery goes well. These things usually do these days I think. Sorry I cannot add anything re a chair.

Re: SSE Half Yearly Report

Thanks Bouleversee. Maybe a cruise is a good idea, but I don't really fancy that. The Reuters report may I think be reporting from the point of view of RWE. I have no idea about the fall out for SSE should the deal not go through but frankly it does not bother me now. How things have changed because...

Re: 'With profits' funds

What I can say is that Standard Life used to be very good as investors and probably still are. There should not be any ongoing charges for With profits funds. Most will tell you that such funds are very poor value, partly I suppose because although there are no obvious charges there is of course a c...

I agree with TMF for once and in fact have just sold my remaining holding in SSE, into a strong market and got £12. Difficult to throw away the yield I know but I have no faith in the company. Now what do I buy?

Thanks StOmer. Not something I have come across before and I am not sure that is worth a great deal but interesting nevertheless. The figs produced by Scotia are more what I would have expected. They may be on to something in Japan with a lot of what they call over capitalised companies and the shar...

Re: SSE Half Yearly Report

I think the reason the s.p. is shooting up today is that it has just announced that it is to create a new company to hold its renewable energy assets. But there is no suggestion that they are going to spin it off so still the same assets. I think it is more relief that the dividend has been increas...

I don't know Julian. Why not just ring the ever helpful ATS and ask them to confirm. Your scheme should work unless II suddenly place an embargo on transfers from ATS, which is surely likely to happen if enough people do it.

Meanwhile can any fool recommend a good recliner chair? Not just allowing tilting back for comfortable couch potato activ...
