Re: How will Brexit affect me and my Family?

Given it is the Leave apologists who are proposing the greatest constitutional and economic change in this country in living memory, I think the burden of proof is on them. Well I can remember Ted Heath taking us into the Common market and then others taking us even further in. Leaving is just a re...

Re: Messy investments - can I pay someone to give them a spring clean?

It is surely not worth your while to pay someone else to sort out a £50,000 portfolio. What is stopping you doing it yourself? Getting permission for dealing is surely not that difficult and anyway just list all the shares and get blanket permission if that is possible, then sell. You then have cash...

Re: Fundsmith - Terry Smith commentary.

I have no argument with Fundsmith, although I do not hold. I see no reason why it should not be a safe haven indefinitely. My comment was solely aimed at his shareholders' letter which does not tell us very much and is much less informative than Buffett in the old days, and in fact Nick Train at the...

I agree with EssDeeAitch. You are kidding yourself if you continue to show them at any valuation. Of course since I assume you are not a public company you can do anything you like.

Re: How do I know if the 4x4 is working?

I have a Q5 Quattro with permanent 4 wheel drive and it tells me this in the manual. It automatically adjusts the power between wheels depending on the road conditions. I assume yours will do the same, but the manual should tell you. The only indication I have is that it gives me a great feeling of ...

Re: How will Brexit affect me and my Family?

I have no objection personally to immigrants as long as they make an attempt to immigrate, although the truth is that it is very unlikely to affect me very much. However inner city living is different; the pressure is there in the form of school places, cost of housing and the NHS. Those pressures ...

Re: How will Brexit affect me and my Family?

Regarding population density in the UK being too high, perhaps this puts it into perspective: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population_density We're only number 53, although many of the higher ones are very small. In Europe Netherlands is at 31 and Germany at 56. If you wan...

Thanks Bachache. Not much we did not already know and not as good as Buffett in his heyday but a decent read nevertheless. I do not hold Fundsmith.

If bnc is old enough to need to have an eye test for a driving licence renewal then he should have been to get his eyes checked long ago.

Re: How will Brexit affect me and my Family?

GS I fear is simply being provocative. He knows as well as I do that if the UK's population is growing at only half that of the world in general that is still far too high for the size of our island(s). Please do not quote all the open spaces we have; I know that. He/she is presumably intelligent (h...

Re: How will Brexit affect me and my Family?

I do not and will not contribute too much to this sort of debate but there was another article in The Times yesterday from a think tank noting once again that our productivity is the lowest in much of Europe. Why? The almost unlimited pool of unskilled (if mostly hard working) labour that is availab...

Re: Poll - out of date stock on supermarket shelves

Out of idle curiosity I just looked in my herbs cupboard. There are herbs from when I lived in France 1982 to 1985, maybe the contents are newer. Also 1 from USA 1987. Also some garam masala made for me by a colleague in the UK 1989. Whoops. Also just made a chilli con carne, checked the herbs and ...

Re: Vodafone

I only hold the two tobaccos from Arb's list, and I think their yield can be explained as can at least some of the others, although I do not much like many of the others for various reasons. I think we need to take the yield as an indicator, not necessarily a reason in itself to reject a particular ...

As any investor knows, diversification is a sensible move. Probably nothing more complicated than that. Dod Does this help in a discussion about tobacco shares? I must be missing something. Not unless dspp was trying to tell us something. Maybe the supplier saw a flaw in being 95% exposed to tobacc...

The countries that you list do not have the English language, which in learning and improving their English is a draw bigger than or over-generous benefits system. You get little benefit from learning German, French, etc, compared to learning English. I can't believe how ignorant you and other rema...

Re: BAT & other tobacco companies - Daily Telegraoh

One of my key suppliers in my dayjob had a business that a few years ago was 95% exposed to tobacco. They were a tier 1 supplier to the big tobacco companies. Over the last 5-years they have aggressively restructured their business to reduce their tobacco exposure to 50%, whilst remaining a tier 1 ...
