Re: Bitten

I doubt that it is Lyme disease but if it is you need to see a doctor. Google it. More likely a nasty little bug. I got one earlier in the year, the site got very red and itchy and the redness began expanding. I would go to see your local pharmacist and ask for his/her opinion if it does not go down...

Re: Tory thinktank - state pension age should rise to 75

A slight complication is that the state pension is payed untaxed - so if you have an additional pension, the two are summed, and the appropriate tax on the sum is taken off the additional pension. This sometimes confuses persons into incorrectly thinking that the state pension is not taxed. Interes...

Re: Greene King - SOLD!

And if you see the other UK interests of LI Ka Shing's wider group, they have a lot of investments in the UK from utilities, to ports to mobile telephone operators so they are not 'green' when it comes to investing here.

As Arb says, they recognised a good thing when they saw it.

I could provide a few recommendations if you need them for future investment. You already have - and I have a couple of yours in my HYP, for which, thanks. Dod101 is always helpful in this regard. For myself, I have found his " Don't touch with a bargepole " assessment particularly useful...

Re: Greene King - SOLD!

It is much too late in the night to give you a sensible answer, but I would think that a lot of the increase in the share price is down to a much lower pound. Specifically, the HK Dollar exchange rate with sterling used a few years ago to be around 12.50/13.00 and is now down to less than 10 to the ...

Re: Greene King - SOLD!

I think a lot of this is down to opportunists taking advantage of the cheaper pound; in fact it is almost a general result of cheaper currency. Assets are priced down say 10/15% on a week or two ago? Of course people are waiting in the wings.

Brexit is not all bad.

Re: The history of HYP4, and the possibility of reviving it

Well, I have no answer to your comment about intuition. I certainly do not comb through Annual Reports, although I read most of them. That is usually to get a 'flavour' of the company though and certainly not to analyse the numbers. They to me are not very important because any good accountant can m...

Re: Greene King - SOLD!

It's right to be pragmatic - one doesn't have much choice - but that does not mean we should celebrate the virtual demise of a two hundred year old famous British company any more than one could ever defend the demise of Cadbury, Tate and Lyle and others. Thanks. Maybe the curse of this medium. I a...

Re: Greene King - SOLD!

Am all ears. Have been investing recent topups into NRR but the recent director sales have spooked me a touch. Lloyds and Legal and General are both on my radar for top ups but would be interested in what you are looking at. Ps I'm maxed out on Tobaccos Hoist on my own petard! Well I would not be a...

Re: The history of HYP4, and the possibility of reviving it

Since HYP4 has morphed into a son of HYP1.... Ignoring DSGI and looking at just 15 selections - a very rough estimate would indicate a dividend pot of ~£41k has been returned and that the original capital input of £75k is now worth ~£100k. Thanks monabri but at the risk of incurring the Wrath of Ar...

Re: Greene King - SOLD!

That's not a good attitude. And what a strange value judgement "not that profitable or popular" - who on earth are you to say? just because it isn't a share that had you personal approval don't condemn it. It's been a really steady and successful company and a good share to own for me sin...

Oh dear, what a tremendous pity. This is one of my longest term shares, and I have no wish to lose it. I know some people will relish the thought of taking a profit and moving on, but I am not in his for a fast buck, but for long term income. So sell a good beer company to a property developer and ...

You could look at Interactive Investor. Although some here have misgivings I have found them efficient and they charge a flat monthly fee depending on how you use the arrangements £9.99 per month and £7.99 per trade but see the website for details. I have seen nothing about A J Bell that would put m...

Re: HSBC the Future

I suspect that has a lot to do with the weak share price but HSBC is caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place at the moment. It needs to keep so many parties reasonably happy and of course the situation in HK cannot be helping because the Chinese think I am sure that the UK is behind some...

Shame that I do not hold but the buyer is part of Li Ka Shing's empire which seems intent on taking over the world. He started out making plastic flowers would you believe. CK stands for Cheung Kong, a very big and highly successful property developer in HK. I suspect that the weak pound has got a l...

Re: The history of HYP4, and the possibility of reviving it

PS: RBS was bought on a trailing 4.7% when the All-Share Index yielded c. 2.7%. Hence it was well into my 'danger zone' (ratio >=160) at ~175. Which, apart from it being High Yield, tells us absolutely nothing, then and now, as to whether it was a suitable HYP candidate. The excessive yield (for th...

Re: The history of HYP4, and the possibility of reviving it

I’m not sure I agree that this is a “daft idea”; but even if it is, I would still be interested to see the results. It will be another bunch of HYP shares selected and then left to perform in a non-tinkering way. I’m interested in how it has performed. I’d also be interested in any discussion which...

Your two top ups are part of my 'core' holdings and both are off their peaks at the moment. A good time for a top up I think.

Just reading this thread whilst debating putting 5-6% into SMT. Compelling :? bear in mind that SMT is techn-focussed, it has a lot in Amazon (9%!), Tesla, Tencent, Netflix etc. So if things change for this sector, it could bring the lot down quickly - I'm thinking Netflix has reached its growth li...

...But HYP4 is probably possible, provided is is treated as a non- tinkering HYP between where pyad left it and now - tinkering decisions are if anything even more difficult to do in an unaffected-by-hindsight way than cash-takeover-proceeds-reinvestment decisions, because for cash takeovers, the f...
