Re: Online Instant Access Savings Account

How about either: Yorkshire BS Internet Saver or Starling Bank current account ? Both pay 0.5% interest on the sort of balance you might want access to in an emergency. For the Starling account, you don't need a credit check unless you are applying for an overdraft, so it's eminently suitable for us...

Re: Scam 'phone call alerts

How to avoid scam phone calls: Never answer a phone call from a number that you don't recognise (caller display definitely ranks as one of the best inventions since sliced bread). If it actually is a genuine/important caller, they will leave a message. If it is really important, they will eventually...

Thanks, that makes sense and is possibly why the OP received the letter from the insurance company demanding that I phone them "to avoid unnecessary premiums being charged to your account" , not that I understand what is meant by unnecessary premiums. Perhaps the timing of the various eve...

Insurance cancellation

(Apologies if this is not quite the right board, but there isn't one for insurance, so I'm just treating it as an extension of everyday banking) I am changing my home insurance policy, and having been sent a reminder to renew, I have now cancelled the direct debit in advance of the policy expiry dat...

Re: Monzo vs Starling bank?

Partially out of curiosity, I opened a Starling account as a "spare" current account (you can never have too many bank cards, in case one gets lost or stolen or a particular bank experiences problems). I'm quite impressed: the app is attractive and mostly intuitive to use, you get pretty m...

Re: iOS Stocks app

Thanks, that's useful to know that it's not just me who has noticed problems. You would think that Apple would take more care to ensure that one of their own pre-installed apps is accurate (although I suspect that maybe the problem might be more in the data feed than in the app itself?).

iOS Stocks app

Is it just me, or is the iOS Stocks app sometimes a bit erratic? Often it seems not to be able to display graphs for certain time periods, or the data shown jumps wildly (as if inaccurate or non-accessible for several days), or sometimes seems to lack data for the most recent past few hours, or, som...

Re: Chugging - The Unacceptable Face of Charity

It annoys me no end that increasing numbers of charities seem only willing to accept donations by direct debit (and often monthly, rather than annual donations, at that), instead of standing order. (I of course ignore chuggers entirely if I encounter them, and only support charities which I have mad...

Re: Are Faster Payments affected by bank holidays?

Thanks, all, for your advice (and experimentation). That is also a useful reminder about the Payment Services Directive timescale requirements. I think I might make a small transfer between my current account and a savings account, on one of the bank holiday dates, just to see whether it does happen...

Are Faster Payments affected by bank holidays?

Does anyone know if the Faster Payments Service works on Bank Holidays? I have been quite impressed to notice that Faster Payments seem to take place even at weekends (although I have not yet had reason to check whether payments received at the weekend count as cleared balance at that time or not). ...

Re: Autumn 2018 stock market drops

The way I sometimes look at it is have I got the investment process right? Is my basic plan sound? As most people have pointed out last weeks sell off although bigger than is common in a week in overall stockmarket terms was a rather trivial fall. It could well fall a lot further. You have to ask y...

Re: Autumn 2018 stock market drops

Thank you, everyone, for your replies. Trying not to get too worried is useful advice. It is disheartening to see almost all of the theoretical gains that I had made over the past year vanish over just a few days, but, on the other hand, there was a little recovery on Friday, so, hopefully that migh...

Autumn 2018 stock market drops

Apologies if this is not the most appropriate board, I wasn't sure where best this might fit. As I am sure everyone has noticed, the world's stock markets have suffered some rather steep drops over the past few days. We are all of course regularly reminded that "the value of investments can go ...

Re: Negative returns on bond funds?

Going back to the OP, I can't see a bond fund buying anything with a negative yield Of course the natural slope of any bond bought at a premium is down towards par (plus final coupon?) so £105 for a 5% I may have worded my question badly, because this is an area that I don't know much about. If you...

Re: Negative returns on bond funds?

When investors as a whole require a higher interest rate than previously to tempt them to buy bonds then they just refuse to buy until the market price drops to the point where the higher interest rate becomes worth paying for. it's like offering less money for a car because you don't think it offe...
