Re: Sold out of NGrid

I'm finding myself increasingly leaning towards collective global investments because as enjoyable as running my share portfolio is, it is very time consuming. Tbh im also wondering if im taking more risk than i need to by being in single name shares (25) in total. It doesn't need to be time consum...

Re: Vodafone topped up

I don't understand the logic. Surely as announced in March 2019, they have cut the annual dividend from 15.07 to 9 and so are no longer eligible for top-up? That would rule them out for selection as a new share. Topping up criteria are up to the individual. If they still rank high and are in recove...

Terry, thanks for your earlier reply. Things have been a bit hectic, so absent from the fool till now. Meant to ask about this as well. What is your reason for transitioning to ITs, instead of topping up existing holdings?

[ These are cumulative so the arrears of preference dividend have to be paid before the ordinaries. I can live with the interrupted cashflow in my portfolio, and am sorely tempted to buy more with the price becoming distressed. 62.5p, (notional) 14.4% yield today. Interesting times. Anyone else? Re: Vodafone Results, including dividend cut.

You read it here first! As Ian said I sold in January at 1.4781 and bought BAT at £25 and HFEL at 3.42 with the proceeds. That bit of tinkering has so far worked out OK. Gengulphus reminded me that in say 10 years time I will know if it was a good idea. So far though, (and I may not have 10 years a...

Re: Start topping up again...but what?

Y I will test some of my criteria on IMB, WPP, SLA, Schroders, MARs etc over the weekend, and let you all know what I finally decide to do. FWIW I just this week topped up SLA and WPP and bought a new holding SMDS. The latter doesnt have such a high yield, but I wanted to add a new sector to my HYP...

As the OP and a new HYP investor, I am quite surprised (understatement) at the amount of discord apparent in many responses. It is sometimes like watching two bald men fight over possesion of a comb. ... There is room for both "churches" in this investment universe and niether one nor the...

Re: Persimmon Trading Update.

The majority of forecasts are wrong, so it's better to just ignore them all. Although we might all loosely agree about "forecasters", ignoring some of the people best placed to know what is going on, reminds me of Mr Gove's assertion that we don't need experts. I profoundly disagree, and ...

Perhaps I should've said what actually happened for me to banish my best friend of 30 years but I can confirm that it was a huge betrayal rather than just 'I forgot your brother's name' and I honestly thought that when I confronted him with it, there would either be a huge fight, or he would collap...

Re: Unitisation question

That, by definition, would allow you to calculate Income Units where dividends are treated as being 'paid away'. However, there is more data required if you want to retrospectively unitise. You also need the valuation of the portfolio every time a share was purchased or sold. This is so you can cal...

I've always been meaning to look into this unitisation lark, but never had the time. But I did not keep track of the cash flows in and out of the accounts, as I treated ...

Re: Marston's (MARS)

I am very sceptical of these interest rate swaps as I’m sure the bankers who sold them to the pub co’s were far more aware of what they were doing than the finance directors who bought them! What are you sceptical about exactly? Interest rate swaps are simple to understand and pretty common, so I d...

I'd also prefer to see debt come down. But then I read in the past that some debt and long maturities can deter takeovers. This section of the March interim statement might be of interest. Note the final section which states they do intent to reduce the ratio of net debt before lease financing to un...

So what are we aware they (who?) have not done, which they were required to do by the letter? The letter specifically states the aim is to "ensure investors have access to the information that they require in order to properly assess the risks and rewards attaching to such shares." The le...
