Re: Got a shilling for the meter?

Much amusement was caused in the bungee household the other day by the proposal that Britain's railways might one day be run on solar power. BJ Don't knock it. A colleague I knew briefly in about 1993/4 had built himself a solar-powered boat. Canopy covered in solar panels, backed by battery like a...

Re: Keyless door lock

Not sure how a mechanical keyless door lock would work, Slarti Simple buttons. Enter a code and it opens. We had one on the front door (to the building, not the flat) where I lived from 2005 to 2013. That stood up to a couple of times when someone tried to force it. Looked something like this .

Citation needed

Worth noting that the misuse of certain “designated titles” is a criminal offence. I wonder where they draw the line with that though, I mean if we all start referring to HRH Crown Prince Nigel Farage , who would get into trouble? Really? I thought we had more-or-less a free-for-all there: a fair f...

Re: Titles

Mind you - are there still sleepers? Doesn't everybody now fly? Am I showing my age? The one and only time I used a sleeper train in Blighty was 2007. It was moderately grim: uncomfortable bed, tiny space, primitive facilities, not I thought worth the extra cost over just a seat. That was for a jou...

Keyless door lock

Anticipating completion of my house purchase, I have in mind to install a new lock on the front door without the inconvenience of carrying a key around. That raises a few questions: - Security. What standards/certifications do I need to look out for to ensure something meets insurance industry stand...

Re: Vodafone and Disqus

If the problem is DNS then using google's DNS will fix it. You can test whether it is DNS by going to the domain itself: if you see the site you expect then DNS is not the problem; if you don't then it probably is. You can probably find a configuration setting in your router to override the default ...

Re: Small Dedicated Computer

2 thoughts on this. I use a VPN (Nord VPN) which I understand is meant to increase security significantly How so? A VPN addresses entirely different security issues to those the OP is concerned with. Also I recall reading that banking apps are generally more secure on mobile phones than on PCs That...

Re: Small Dedicated Computer

Are there other ways to achieve this safety? If you've got access to a 'normal' PC, then building a bootable USB stick with a clean Ubuntu/Linux install on it might be a quicker, cheaper option. The idea being that you can boot from that USB stick when you want to carry out sensitive browsing actio...

Re: Tanker attacks!

I don't understand the desire to defend the Iranians by some people here. History? Take the history over my lifetime: 1. When I was born, Iran was ruled by a Western-imposed despot, who had come to power in a Western-backed coup against a democratic government. 2. A revolution against that in 1979 ...

Re: Tanker attacks!

The truth is of course, we don't know. Hence Cui Bono, and my suggestion that it could be someone not affiliated with any state. Supplementary thought. If the driving force were Iranian hardliners, should we blame Trump[1] for weakening their democratic government, damaging their rule of law, and st...

Rt Hon Dr (Female) Rt Hon Dr (Male) In my working life I've found "Dr" the most incredibly useful title - albeit without the extra claptrap in the above. Scenario: I need to write to a stranger. Let's say, the author of something that's of significant relevance to my work, and that I want...

Heh. They ought to do well with my garden: next door's cat is far too fat and lazy to kill birds himself, but asserts his territorial claim against any other cat entering my garden! Yet most of the vertebrate wildlife I see is just squirrels, pigeons, and occasional crows.

And the US government and its agencies are far from the only entities capable of forging footage, though it has form. US Form on Iran is particularly disturbing. When Khatemi tried to mend relations with the West in the 1990s (after the turmoil of the revolution and war with the West's proxy Saddam ...

The thread title was intended as a little creativity, to relate the subject to one known for its culinary distinction.

I wasn't expecting any very positive response, but worth a try. And the chicken-fanciers among us clearly do have a use for them 8-)

OK, so who hasn't made a joke about giving politicians a dose of what they deserve? Even if it's only glorifying terrorists by comparing Guy Fawkes favourably to others who have entered Parliament. You've haven't! Come what may, I find the whole episode somewhat shocking. Damn. As I wrote five year...

Cui bono?

- Someone seeking to monger war in the area? Need not be affiliated with any state - they could be looking at Gavrilo Princip and Yigal Amir.
- Trump's anti-Iran Agenda?
- Someone with a substantial bet on oil price/futures?
