Re: EU confirms UK can change its mind on SM and CU during transition

You have to admire the size of the toys some Brexiteers are hurling out of their prams. Imagine what would have happened if they'd lost the advisory plebiscite... Just sad to see the end of democracy. The final end will be in the next few weeks/months when a parliament 'revolt' opts to remain in th...

Re: Ultimatum to the EU!

The EU want us to stay in the EEA (single market), Barnier has made no secret of that, I’m not sure about a customs union as well, a FTA would eliminate tariffs so a customs union on its own would be of limited benefit to the EU. Remaining in the SM OR EU is paramount to not having left. Free movem...

Re: Ultimatum to the EU!

Once we leave the single market and become a 3rd country, all those non tariff barriers return, that’s what will drive the economic hit. A customs union with the EU, won’t help with this either. Presently we're billed 20 billion and export 200Bn of goods to the EU, whilst 320Bn of exports to the UK...

Re: EU confirms UK can change its mind on SM and CU during transition

We can choose not to solve that problem, in which case there will be no withdrawal agreement and no transition. A50 has finite time, possible extension if all sides agree, but unlikely that would be extended into the next EU parliament. The 'deal' is simply the transition arrangements. Fundamentall...

Re: Already April

"Already April" ... yep. For a 1 year old a year is a lifetime and appears to pass slowly. For a centenarian a year is just 1% of a lifetime and appears to flash by.

Re: Ultimatum to the EU!

I think "just leaving" without a deal, and no £40bn has got a lot going for it. I would like to be in the room when Barnier et al have to explain to the poorer EU members why they have thrown away £40bn on a point of principle. The EU's not bothered about the 40Bn. They've been printing a...

Re: EU confirms UK can change its mind on SM and CU during transition

Carry on. Ignore what was campaigned ... and accept Corbyn with a massive Labour majority come the next GE. I along with many who voted Leave will be voting Labour in that GE in reflection of those such as yourself and many MP's who simply refuse to respect the democratic majority choice. Ultimately...

Re: EU confirms UK can change its mind on SM and CU during transition

Solving the Irish border completely really needs the UK to stay in both the CU and SM. No. Ireland could leave the EU. No resolution is required on the UK side. Its the EU that is insisting that the UK solves its (the EU's) problem. Note how they've also dropped the ball firmly into Irish hands so ...

They did and was one of the influencing factors that I made my vote decision upon at the time https://youtu.be/9fDn0MvcHQ4

Re: EU confirms UK can change its mind on SM and CU during transition

A more sensible discussion can then be had about how we go forwards as a country, respecting the result, but not pissing off the other half of the country in the process by ignoring their views yet inflicting on them years of economic misery to pay for a hard Brexit. Or pissing off a substantial nu...

Re: EU confirms UK can change its mind on SM and CU during transition

Certainly in the eyes of some Brexiteers staying in the SM or CU won’t be ‘proper’ Brexit, but really that’s ideological nonsense and any competent Govt should be able to politely dismiss such nonsense, while respectfully carrying out the result of the vote, which was simply to leave the EU. In the...

What they might consider to be the best interest of the country is wrong. More a case of vested interest.

Re: EU confirms UK can change its mind on SM and CU during transition

CU will be deemed to not have implemented Brexit and the closer it is before even that is implemented to the next GE the better the prospects of a predominant more extreme government come 2022 ... that will make even the worst economic predictions for Brexit look pale by comparison to the reality of...

Re: EU confirms UK can change its mind on SM and CU during transition

Yes, May has said she intends to take us out of the Single Market and the EU has confirmed (repeatedly) that the consequence of this decision is that the future relationship will at best be a free trade agreement covering goods. Meh! So trade with the EU that was relatively light decades ago, but h...

Re: Learning about Gilts

Fundamentally gilts are priced to inflation expectations. Nominal gilt yield for a fixed date less the inflation gilt yield of the same/similar date is suggestive of what the market expects inflation to be between now and that date. The further out, 20 years or whatever and typically the market migh...

Re: UK Military Action

Reading around about 107 missiles were launched, and none were intercepted. . . The western raid itself was at the slap-on-the-wrist level, no more. One side says something like 70% were intercepted, the other say none, either way interception of anything less than 100% is penetrable. Four RAF plan...

Re: Learning about Gilts

I think it was Groucho Marx ... A man calls his broker, who tells him that he’s got a hot new stock pick. ‘Buy it, buy it,’ the man says. The next day he calls the broker for an update – the stock is up 5% ‘Buy it, buy it, the man says. The next day he calls the broker again, and the stock is up ano...

Re: Removing moss.

Just guessing as we don't have a moss problem, but wouldn't simple table salt be a option. I do tend to put a teaspoonful on dandelions as/when then start showing on the lawn, great for slugs too. Moss being a high moisture growth I guess wouldn't take too kindly to salt ???

Re: Learning about Gilts

I don't personally think this is a good time to be investing in gilts. The prices could easily shift downwards. Read a quote somewhere (haven't a link and can't be bothered to search), that suggested the average investors average stocks rewards lagged T-Bills. By the time you factor in brokers fees...
