Re: Backup software

Very few thoughts on the media used (agreed, possibly a bit OT as the title is "software", but probably wise to view them together; frequency of backup is probably also another consideration)... Good point. For my part I have a separate arrangement to back up just my user files twice week...

Re: Backup software

...But you will probably also encounter licensing issues, the rules about transferring installations to new hardware depend on how the original installation was created... The simple rule for Windows 10 is that a digital licence is linked to the unique hardware ID of the PC and stored on the Micros...

Re: Backup software

Can I confirm my understanding though of this - that I can't put an image made on one PC onto a different PC as drivers etc could be different? Windows 10 is pretty good at sorting itself out when moved to dissimilar hardware. Drivers for most common devices are included in W10, so it can usually w...

Re: Backup software

Suppose my hard disc crashes , could I replace it, use the backup and then proceed as though nothing had happened? ....Would something such as Macrium Reflect handle the hassle of reinstalling W10 etc. Yes. Macrium Reflect makes an image of all the partitions required to run Windows. You hard drive...

Re: Windows 10 version 1903 'May 2019 Update' now released

There is a known issue in build 18362.116 that will not allow you to do an in-place upgrade while a usb drive is attached. The Catch 22 is that if you used the Media Creation Tool to make an install USB then your setup files are on a USB that must be connected! This issue has now been fixed. The la...

Re: Backup software

..Have occasionally had to pull individual files off a backup, but haven't done a full restore (thankfully, yet). You should, just to reassure yourself that it works. As Slarti says, you could always swap in a spare drive and restore to that. An alternative test is available if you have both Window...

Re: Backup software

...I'm probably too old school to trust a backup done inside Windows while Windows is running (IYSWIM) not to lock a Windows file or copy it in a dynamic state which makes reinstating tricky, but I'm assured it should work. I'd just prefer not to do a backup from within Windows while it's running. ...

Re: Windows 10 version 1903 'May 2019 Update' now released

It's been more of an exercise to see how good MS' telemetry is really, especially as they have ramped up the machine learning recently (apparently)... Understood. As far as I can tell the MS approach for 1903 is 'ultra-cautious' after they got their fingers burned in the enthusiastic false start fo...

I got this last night on Windows Update... The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is on its way. We're offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn't quite ready for it.... ...It would be handy if MS indicated what the specific issues are... Do you want 1903? If so, why not use the MCT t...

Re: Highest yielding shares underperformed FTSE 100 over five years

... Brewin Dolphin, the wealth manager which did the analysis, also carried out the same research over 10 and 15 years, with similar results, but the difference is particularly stark over the five-year period. Over that period the highest yielding shares would have underperformed the FTSE 100 index...

Re: upgrade process

What are the steps involved, software-wise? I've upgraded to W10, and have changed disks, but not both at the same time. Personally I would never do two things at once. If it goes tits up, you don't know which went wrong. Before changing drives, Bree has recommended taking a system image with Macri...

Re: 30 year old bottle of Glenfiddich

So in clearing out my basement today I discovered an opened and half consumed bottle of Glenfiddich. It has been at cellar temperature for all this time. I recall that it was a gift in 1988. Does anyone know which of the following states it will likely be in, before I open it and take a risk? 1) Ag...

Presumably the mechanics are that SDA complete a share transfer form transferring the shares at no cost from their nominee company to you, send it to the registrar(Computershare) in the usual way and the registrar sends the certificate to you. Re: Online downloading MS Office

I'm looking to get a copy of MS Office onto my laptop at home. Can anyone recommend a decent site to acquire said software from please? I take it you are looking for a one-off purchase rather than signing up for an Office 365 subscription at Microsoft. Actually, you can still get that from Microsof...
