Re: Improving home wifi

I've no idea really, but bought the Google one to make things better, and don't think it has. Another issue that can affect performance and coverage is overlapping channels used by your neighbours (or your other mesh). Choosing a relatively unused channel can make a difference. This free utility ca...

Re: Improving home wifi

... Do you happen to know if the BT units absolutely have to be put on their stands so that they are oriented vertically or can you get away with placing them flat? Don't know, my daughter uses them on their stands. Laying them flat would change the orientation of the aerials, so coverage and the a...

Re: Improving home wifi

One of my neighbours has a Google Mesh, 2 units I think, and he seems quite happy with it. Google isn't the only mesh system available (or the cheapest). I bought BT Whole Home Wi-Fi (2 disks) for my daughter/son-in-law and they're happy with it too. https://www.shop.bt.com/learnmore/bt-branded-pro...

Re: Paypal dissing my browser.

We'll have to agree to disagree about IE11 Bree as we've been over this before on other threads. I wasn't touting IE as secure, only pointing out that it passed PayPal's minimum requirements. Personally I'd never use it for my financial sites. For that (and not much else) I use Edge. Paypal like al...

Re: What to wear?

BTW, have you noticed the recent 'fashion' for long sleeved shirts to no longer have a breast pocket? I'm having to grab the few that are left as/when I find them... Surely it's always been the case that some do and some don't? A quick look through the M&S website shows that the majority do. Sa...

Re: Paypal dissing my browser.

Paypal sending out security alerts about outdated browsers (IE does very poorly on security reviews and also HTML5 tests) seems entirely plausible, seeing as their whole business model is financial and preventing fraud should be top of their list. Whether the email is genuine or not is beside the p...

Re: Paypal dissing my browser.

perhaps as Breelander suggests, they don't actually know what browser you're using. I thought Breelander was saying the exact opposite, here: Every website you visit can see what browser you are using ... I was suggesting that the sensible way to tell you that you may need an updated browser would ...

Re: Paypal dissing my browser.

Anyway, email from what appears to be Paypal today suggesting that my browser is obsolete and no longer acceptable for using their services. How would an email know what browser you were using? Sounds extremely likely to be a phishing attempt... ...or worse. That link is most likely to a site that ...

Re: What to wear?

No T-shirts, just ordinary shirts with long and short sleeves, all with breast pockets... T-shirts have their place - under an ordinary shirt for the winter months ;) BTW, have you noticed the recent 'fashion' for long sleeved shirts to no longer have a breast pocket? I'm having to grab the few tha...

I'm ashamed to say I can't even find the frigging Control Panel Not necessarily your fault at all: MSFT has deliberately made it harder to find in order to get people to use Settings (gear-wheel symbol) on the LHS of the new Metro (tablet-style) interface. 'Settings' contains some but not all of th...

Re: Chrome - Proper Adblock no More?

How long before all the adblockers extensions are removed, apart from Chrome's own ad blocker that does not block ads at all? ... I doubt there is some grand conspiracy plan by Google to disrupt blockers. More likely is that the adblock plus extension is not keeping up with the frequent Chrome upda...

Re: IAStorDataMgrSvc wants access to my documents

I must admit, even though it says so right there in the setting description, I'd somehow missed that Controlled Folder Access also trapped changes to memory ... it's not exactly self-evident from the naming, and I'd always assumed (obviously incorrectly) that memory hacking was covered by Exploit p...

Re: IAStorDataMgrSvc wants access to my documents

That is the issue. Is the executable trying to get in the legitimate one or malware? The legitimate program does not have any obvious business poking around in my Documents folder... It may not be the Documents folder it was trying to access. The Desktop is also protected, also memory. The details ...
