Re: Mobile plans in Canada
I went to Vancouver last July and asked my UK provider, Three, about it and both they, and my relatives when I got there, said Canada was one of the most expensive places for telecoms. I think your deal sounds okay and at least when you sleep or eat, WiFi was good everywhere. Might be worth checking...

Re: Southern Philippines
Hi Taurus, Thanks for posting about your trip to the Philippines. It made me smile when you described previous security problems on Mindanao island, reminding me I met two Australian guys in El Nido, Palawan who were on a diving course. They said they normally lived on Mindanao with their Filipino w...

Re: Lanzarote
I meant “almost-rooftop” rather than “almist-rooftop.” I was actually trying to stress the view rather than talk it down!

Re: Lanzarote
Having been to Lanzarote just before Christmas, can I just add that I think Arrecife, the capital, is worth a day’s “pottering” too? From Playa Blanca it’s about 40 minutes on a cheap bus and it has the Strava Bar or Tabla restaurant for lunch, the old harbour at San Gines for a very pleasant beer i...

Re: Carillion post-mortem
Practical question: Since it seems that our Carillion holdings are now worth nothing, at what point, and on what date, do we record the capital loss for CGT purposes? And will brokers provide some sort of evidence, of a similar function to a contract note, of the date and zero value? I held to the ...

Re: Barclays Smart Investor
I’ve transferred three accounts to Charles Stanley and, after about 9 weeks, all the shareholdings in each were transferred but the cash is still outstanding. It’s smallish amounts for two accounts but in the case of my SIPP, where the shares were transferred on or before 1 December, the outstanding ...

Re: Barclays ISA transfers
More than two months after my ISA was transferred, I am still waiting for the balance of the ISA cash - £650 of dividends that arrived at Barclays just after the transfer date - to be sent on to Charles Stanley. The situation with my SIPP is worse. Barclays finally transferred the SIPP shareholdings...

Re: Recommendations for accommodation in New York - near Broadway - and flights
Hi Clariman, On flights I always use the skyscanner site, rightly or wrongly - it’s just easy. We stayed at the Element hotel near Times Square. (Actually I think it’s on the same street as the Sofitel. It’s close anyway.) It’s only 3-star but the rooms are well-appointed and comfy, particularly the...

Re: Barclays Smart Investor
False alarm... The shares have transferred, but none of the cash...... Ah well..... Penteluk, I’ve got the same problem with my ISA which I’m trying to transfer to Charles Stanley - the shares transferred about 5 days ago but not the funds. It’s a bit disconcerting. Can you say how long it took for...

Re: Barclays Smart Investor
Thanks for this Pink Dalek - I'll check it out on Monday. I bought these for my SIPP actually and just assumed I was buying - what seemed to me at the time - to be a really cheap FTSE100 stock. They've doubled in price and still have a yield around 2.9% so they've been good, whatever they are! Thank...

Re: Barclays Smart Investor
Yyuryyub, I've got a text about website down-time before now but not so far about tomorrow's downtime. So, just in case you don't know, the site will be down from 0030 to 1730 tomorrow. For some reason, my shares in 3i Plc have been reclassified on Smart Investor as an Investment Trust. Barclays are...

Re: Barclays Smart Investor
Are we entitled to any compensation does any one know?[/quote] Awaiting the first dollop of charges. I'm not sure about compensation but surely this is not fit for a private investor's purpose? I've been waiting for a reply on "live chat" for about 15 minutes now. They can't possibly inten...

Re: Barclays
Many thanks to DSPP for linking to Interactive Investor (which may yet be of interest. I'm still looking at the escape options.) Here's a short video of A J Bell, if it helps anyone, because it shows their screen format which includes that amazing feature - movement on the day! I'm not sure if it's ...

Re: Barclays
Anyone have any idea how to view the price change today as opposed to from purchase? And where to find current index values? I did find indices at one point but lost it again. I can't find % movement on the day either or an easy link to the RNS that might be driving that movement. But you can get t...

Re: Barclays
I do apologise for causing confusion. I said you have to enter the whole password currently with Barclays Stockbrokers and I was confusing Barclays with another account. With Barclays you do currently just have to enter 2 random digits - sorry. Reading the replies I may have to use a new log-in proc...

Re: Barclays
Thanks Biggles. I run two accounts too and on the current Barclays Stockbrokers site, i can log into both using two tabs and one device - separate log-ins obviously - but i just see the shares relating to each account. Your experience does sound a bit worrying. Currently the Barclays Stockbrokers ac...

Re: Barclays
It's a shame but i'm considering leaving Barclays too although the (apparent) improved security on Smart Investor sounded good. Anyone got any experience of an execution-only Broker combining a good security system with ease of access? E.g my Bank send me a code over the phone which I then input on ...

Is harassment not an offence?
I'd be grateful for any advice on this problem for a friend. My friend's partner is Polish and has lived in the UK since 2003. She has had dual nationality for eight years. They have a four year old son together. In 2003 she left a violent and abusive relationship with an Egyptian national working i...

Re: Visiting Cuba
I would recommend people travel in Cuba rather than take an all-inclusive package which would probably be Varadero-based. Varadero is not really Cuba - it's a homogenised honey pot designed to bring in foreign currency. It's quite bland really - you feel you could be anywhere to be honest. It remind...
