Re: World population

I don't think the planet can support the current population at 'a reasonable standard of living' (or at least my idea of a reasobable standard of living). We're killing everything that moves, but the biggest concern must be the warming oceans. I have little doubt that we could support the present p...

Who'd have thought that an aircraft produced by the European uberstate apparatus could be better than the product of the wonderful free market US?

I claim education (and healthcare and law and order) are societal burdens, and need to be considered and organised as such by our government. Matt I'd say they were more societal goods. John Sure. They are beneficial i.e. "good". But you must have got my point. "Goods" need to b...

My daughter is totally vegan for ethical reasons and does like the taste and texture of meat so often eats substitutes such as seitan...not Quorn since that is not vegan. I have stopped eating meat and don't really go for the fake meat substitutes since I am against over processed food in general. ...

The problem is not private education or healthcare, which actually reduce the burden on the public system. The problem is that there is no free market in these services, meaning that the price cannot move to balance out demand and supply.

Would you propose the US system for that?

Wait. It's up to the cashier to assess the situation and prioritise their attention as per their training. Some stores have specifically trained their cashiers to engage in conversation and to treat the current customer as the only customer, other stores train to maximise throughput. What you don't...

At what stage does the wait become too long?

I am not in a particular rush but if I was in the other customer's position I would have some consideration to others waiting for service.

Re: What would you do?

I think stage one would be breathing out heavily through my nose and shake my head slowly. Stage two would be to turn round slightly, catch the eye of someone else in the queue, roll my eyes and shrug. Stage three would be the nuclear option, the tut. I went through each of those stages...before fi...

What would you do?

I am waiting in the queue of a large store today, where there is one large queue and you are called to the tills as they become free. Three tills are in action but two of them seem to be involved in complex transactions resulting in effectively one till open. I am at the front of the queue and the t...
