And now it's on its way home: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-50403272 --kiloran As somebody who grew up reading SciFi, this is really scary.... Japan's space agency, Jaxa, said the collected samples could shed light on the origins of the Solar System. Great! Bring 'em back to earth, then wai...

Re: Thoughts on a "bond ladder" in defence against downturns?

Its basically a way of liability matching your portfolio, aiui. You set it up with bonds of different durations to mature each year - its one way of providing a risk free floor for spending in retirement. Another way is to buy an annuity. I myself run something similar for the cash element of my po...

Re: TransferWise card for holiday spending - good experience

I tend to use a Nationwide card to withdraw largish cash sums from ATMs - to avoid the £200 monthly restriction on transferWise. Also good way to pay and holding/damage deposits for apartments and to reduce the costs for receive the repayment Likewise for renting cars. I use Revolut, but it's the s...

Re: Followers on Photobucket.

is there an option in your account to deny others the chance to "follow" you? or that you can block people etc? (I really wouldnt know - i've never heard of photobucket before :-) ) They were quite popular about 20 years ago and I had loads of pics on it to share with others. They didn't ...

Re: Bloody teachers, or schools!

But perhaps the teachers can spell, although these days they may well think it doesn't matter. If they can, it's an improvement on my day. Our English teacher in our O-level year certainly couldn't: even when she gave us a spelling test, she had the wrong answers for three of twenty words (and only...

Re: Electric shavers any suggestions please.

Crikey, 18 years for an electric shaver? Some kind of record. I discovered electric shavers relatively late in life (early 30s) and have never stopped kicking myself for not using them earlier. I'm using a Braun at the moment but, like the others I can recommend the Phillips brand and have to admit ...

To date Nationwide and MBNA no alternative plan in place. Nationwide have a card reader, can't you use that? I suggest this, no go. Whyever not? It is one of their standard methods and will continue in use after the change to their log on procedures. Received today from Nationwide: (my Bold) What y...

If you have a current account, Nationwide will still allow you to use the card reader if you don't want to use a phone. My attitude to security has changed a lot over the last few yea...

Re: Fed Up with Nationwide

I've found them not-too-bad when I've used their online contact-us facility. Response may not be immediate, but it comes. The big letdown came a decade ago in the banking shakeout, when they dropped most of the things that had made them stand out over 20+ years before that. Like always holding out ...

Wednesday's Top Tip: Think of a subject, any subject. Now imagine that everyone is gutted, stunned, gobsmacked, and there is outrage, fury, uproar, mounting anger, growing concern, growing resentment and the story has gone viral. Repeat for another subject. You will save hundreds of pounds by never ...

No, only audio. It's just for very rare occasions when it may be cheaper to phone using mobile data than using the phone network.

How much data required for Skype or Whatsapp call?

If I were to use my smartphone to call somebody using Whatsapp or Skype, with no WiFi available, does anyone know if one uses less mobile data than the other? I did an experiment with Skype many years ago and can't remember how many Mb I needed per minute, but I do remember being surprised at how li...

Thanks to everyone for the advice. We had a great twelve days in Jordan, three at Petra, then nine at a resort on the Dead Sea for some serious relaxing. Driving was easy and safe, petrol cheap. Free WiFi is everywhere and the mobile data service means that they just gave us a mobile WiFi thingy for...

Re: Scam 'phone call alerts

This is one reason why I would not buy shares in BT.... They could limit the number of rogue calls by allowing customers to dial a 4 digit number to register the last number called, and if BT receive , say 50 , independent on that number in a day, it gets blocked. The only reason why I currently ha...

I sometimes use Revolut which I believe uses the same system and I calculated the exchange rate to be 3.5% better than a normal bank card. Both Revolut and Transferwise seem to be well known all over the world, especially by teachers abroad, since setting up a new currency account is easy. Good advi...

Re: Interaction between taps and lights

I've never noticed whether it's the hot or cold tap or both, but I'll check and report back. Alternatively it’s an optical illusion that is happening when the brain is processing the noise from the tap. Do other people notice the effect, or could you video it and play it back without the noise and ...
