Re: Recommendations

Just quickly... Adnams do an alcohol free Ghost Ship which is pretty good. They sell it in Wetherspoons but don't know where you can buy it off trade.

Re: Daily Mail & General Trust (DMGT)

Hi Folks Does anyone much about this outfit? For instance what FTSE Index it particular...the LondonStockExchange page gives a '-' for this, and Interactive Investor page also fails to tell me of this setting. All I've picked up so far, is that it has Market cap of about £1.58B and that the shares ...

Crikey... and Dod accused me of going off at a tangent further up this thread :-) Now we're onto discussions about nuclear reactions. Flipping 'eck!

Re: Card Factory (CARD)

I agree, both the OM and ROCE have been pretty good for the five year period (tailing off a little now). The dividend cover seems to be poor (LSE sheet I'm looking at doesn't show the FCF) and EPS growth negative although revenue per share is ticking up steadily. With the dividend uncovered for the...

Re: Patient Capital

Any views on Woodford Patient Capital Trust? Trading at a 20% - 25% discount to NAV. Obviously we live in interesting times, and the poor guys head is probably screwed up for a few weeks or months. Must be pretty tough to go broke buying dollar notes for 75 cents. I have no view on the trust itself...

Re: Woodford Equity Income Fund Suspends Trading

I'd be very interested in hearing more detail/explanation about your comment, Si. Are you talking about synthetic ETFs, stock lending in ETFs, or something else, for example, an ETF that is based in non-liquid assets like property/infrastructure? This is a genuine question, not bait. I have a feeli...

Re: Card Factory (CARD)

What am I missing that makes this an investment case, with that price history? VRD You're probably right that if you're a momentum investor only interested in shares that are rising it's not for you. But CARD is a high quality retail operation with average ROCE > 18% and Operating margin > 19% that...

Re: Woodford Equity Income Fund Suspends Trading

This is a great advertisment for investment trusts over open-ended funds. In similar circumstances the investment trust's share price would fall without the need for forced sales. Of course, this does not only apply to OEICs. The same also applies to some ETFs where there is a veneer of liquidity i...

Re: Woodford Equity Income Fund Suspends Trading

Simoan has changed the discussion somewhat, not that I disagree with what he is saying because poor stockpicking was presumably the cause of the redemptions in the first place, but the reason for the fund to suspend trading was the lack of liquidity, something I would have thought that Woodford wou...

Re: Woodford Equity Income Fund Suspends Trading

Well, I only hold two stocks in common with the Woodford fund and I doubled up my position in Burford this morning. My old nan used to tell me never to look a gift horse in the mouth. Thanks Neil! Enjoy your pie, mate! :-) All the best, Si Well, that was fun... someone started dumping Watkin Jones ...

i posted about burford on the other thread that's running. i am encouraged to add too ! would be interested in your view on stobart and new river retail . thanks. Re: Woodford Equity Income Fund Suspends Trading

I think your views equally apply to his old mate Mark Burnett in his running of EDIN and PLI. At both a macro level and individual stock-picking level his decisions have been poor, yet he is sticking obstinately to a failing approach, awaiting a time when this may or may not come good. That is not ...

Re: Woodford Equity Income Fund Suspends Trading

But as we have already agreed that was not Woodford's problem with WEIF. It was simply one of liquidity. When I say 'simply' that it is what it is, a simple fundamental issue. Borrow short and lend long and you are asking for trouble, however rosy things may look. Dod No, I don't think it was just ...

Re: Woodford Equity Income Fund Suspends Trading

Stockpicking is about selling as well as buying. Absolutely agree with this. Knowing when to sell investments is what differentiates shrewd portfolio managers from those that just benefit from LTBH dumb luck. BTW I'm not saying this with hindsight given recent events, I long maintained back on TMF ...

Re: Woodford Equity Income Fund Suspends Trading

And the difference between Woodford and Smith is...? To be honest, Terry Smith fell foul of this same of combination of hubris and illiquidity with the FEET trust to a certain extent. However, there's no problem whatsoever with liquidity in the main Fundsmith Equity fund given the size of the compa...

Re: Avation (AVAP)

Leo, As Carcosa has made clear in his post, you have to think differently about certain companies. Avation is an asset play, so more like a REIT than a standard operating company making widgets in a factory. This is why asset value and cost of debt are always central considerations in Carcosa's exce...

Re: CL Final - Spurs vs. LFC

You have to draw the line somewhere! No you don't. It's too late to pull up the draw bridge now and make sure "big teams" only win anything. Anyway, you’ve already admitted that you are a Spurs fan so you’re biased. No, I'm not biased at all actually but you clearly are. You have no idea ...

There should be a CL rule that if you haven’t won your domestic league in the past 50 years you’re ineligible.

What a stupid comment. Why not make it 29 years?

Re: CL Final - Spurs vs. LFC

The good news is we normally play well against you lot and we'll have pretty much a full strength squad that was in desperate need of a rest at the end of PL season due to lack of depth. It'll be a much better game than you think. Oh I'm not over-confident at all. Kane is going to be available, is ...
