Re: Electric Screwdriver - Wooden Fence

I find a decent manual screwdriver is often best on stubborn screws, as power drivers offer less control and are therefore more likely to simply chew up the slot or crosshead. I agree although the better combis do have a lot of torque together with very controllable delivery. Often a screw into woo...

Re: How many pay Income Tax?

I’ve guessed 45-50%. ISTM that minimum wage earners, part-timers, casual and zero-hours workers and a fair number of pensioners must make up around half of the adult population.

Re: Why are speaker stands so low?

My B&W 801s are large enough that the tweeters are almost exactly level with my ears when seated. Sadly my hearing range has long ago dropped to the point where tweeters are scarcely contributing much. ;(

Re: No deal preparations

“When your "experts" have been so spectacularly wrong in the past and on so many occasions, why should they be believed in the future?” Couldn’t agree more, puts weather forecasting on a pedestal. But like weather forecasting, continual ludicrous inaccuracies don’t seem to deter the unknow...

Re: Burglar alarms

Thanks one and all for your responses. I am not interested in the small discount insurers give. My main purpose for having an alarm fitted is that most of the neighbours have one, so my house is an obvious choice for the local burglar. That being the case, I would buy a couple of alarm 'boxes' and ...

Re: A base for a shed

Just to add a completely different option...... The shed SHOULD have bearers under the floor - usually 2 x 1 inch or so bits of timber. This raises the shed just enough for stuff to get under, and stay damp. I tend to put 3 inch fence posts at 90 degrees to these, at 18 - 24 inch intervals (a cheap...

Re: Mirroring a laptop HD to SSD

To wrap up. I downloaded the free Macrium Reflect as suggested, connected up the new SSD to the usb>sata converter and cloned the laptop drive to it. Exchanged the laptop HD for the SSD (5 minutes - howto video on HP site) and it wouldn't boot (incomprehensible error screen). Luckily I'd made the Ma...

Re: Boris Johnson PM - how it's going?

Actually I did (in France, not Italy). It's perfectly possible, provided you follow procedure. Next? I had the dubious pleasure of closing one in the Netherlands. Again straightforwards with fairly rigid rules to follow but my goodness, the costs, to say nothing of the commitment to ongoing staff s...

Re: Mirroring a laptop HD to SSD

So in case anyone's interested it turned out that tapping the escape key on startup entered the bios and yes it can boot from usb. I'll go and buy an ssd now - surprised how relatively cheap they've become.

Re: Mirroring a laptop HD to SSD

Thanks all. Yes W10. Sounds straightforwards enough. I’ll have to check whether the thing can boot from usb. It’s an HP dv6-7200sa by the way and it doesn’t invite you to press F2 or whatever at boot time but I dare say there’ll be a key combination to bypass boot on the web somewhere. Don’t know wh...

Mirroring a laptop HD to SSD

I’d like to swap my laptop drive for a SSD to speed it up. It has a Toshiba 1TB hard drive which is partitioned into the boot drive and a small recovery partition. It only has a single hard drive slot. 2 questions. Is there a way to mirror the hard drive onto a SSD - I can’t think of a way to connec...

Re: New leader for the Lib Dems

What about all the other issues? The voters have not trusted the Libs enough to form a government in over 100 years. The best the Libs can hope for is to be part of a coalition. And the new leader has already ruled out a deal with Corbyn, whilst saying that she regrets her previous collaboration wi...

Re: Migrating the wife's computer

I’ve done what you propose without any real issues, cloning a drive for a computer swap, and also done it the ‘easy’ way by just transplanting the disk(s) into the target machine. Licensing was already covered by previous 7->10 upgrades but I took a minor precaution of switching to the basic VGA dri...

Re: Phones: Is newer always better?

I’m on iPhone so less relevant perhaps, but I’m finding that the advances of the last 3 years or so have meant nothing in the slightest to me so I’m currently 3 (at least) models behind and completely abreast of any OS or app updates.

Re: parking rights, apparant conflict

The nub of your argument is that you are assuming that planning permission was conditional on private parking being provided. I think you might have difficulty proving this in the first place. Following that you say that you have a ‘right’ to park in that particular space though it’s perhaps not exc...

Just north of the Central belt in semi rural Scotland it is obvious that I live in a different world. Scottish Central belt here and luckily there is lots of new house building around which seems to have soaked up most of the cowboys who are willing to take steady work for peanut wages. Heaven help...
