Re: HMRC Tax Forum

Yes, I agree with seagles. I am getting close to 80 and also an early user of the HMRC's on-line system. Let's get rid of these ageist comments that imply that anyone over 65, or whatever threshold you choose - usually at least 10 years older than the speaker, has completely lost competence and need...

Re: HMRC Tax Forum

I find this discussion rather silly and pointless scaremongering. Everything else is or is going digital. If anything, HMRC is behind the trend. One is perfectly entitled to continue to use paper or hang on the phone for tens of minutes, but don't attribute your choice to Machiavellian plotting by H...

Re: Laptop query

Whatever, new gadget you get it will always take a bit of getting used to. W10 is definitely better, faster and more secure than W7 and I think that after you have got rid of the stuff you don't want, you will soon find it is easy to use. Personally, when I switched from W7 to W10, quite some time a...

What you say is correct, barchid, but as in all investments there is some risk. IMO the downside risk is low. For what it's worth Simon Thompson in Investors Chronicle agrees: https://www.investorschronicle.co.uk/comment/2019/10/31/exploit-a-glaring-valuation-anomaly/

Mercia Asset Management

This AIM IT share has been subject to a severe sell-off as a result of the Woodford debacle and the forced liquidation of assets. At 24p it is now at about a 50% discount to NAV and is an excellent entry point both for the eventual reduction of the discount as the share overhang is worked off and th...

But make sure you run in 'Standard' not 'Administrator' mode. Re: Discretionary Trust >Investment Trusts.

or maybe in the OPs case, where the trust specifies what happens to the trust funds on the death of the initial beneficiary. Can you do that with a bare trust? The point about a bare trust is that the assets in the trust are the beneficiary's. The trustees are simply in charge until the beneficiary...

Re: Discretionary Trust >Investment Trusts.

The tax issue is another reason for going for a bare trust. The assets are owned by the beneficiary so they have their own tax allowances. See HL's explanation: https://www.hl.co.uk/news/articles/arch ... grandchild.

Re: Discretionary Trust >Investment Trusts.

Why pay for a discretionary trust? If you are going to buy ITs and index funds then the management is taken care off and no need for regular review; you are effectively paying double. So just get a bare trust and put in ITs and index funds of the sort already suggested, with dividends automatically ...

We have solar PV panels and have had a leaflet through the door offering a 'Duracell Energy Bank' to store the energy we don't use and would otherwise have exported to the grid. There is not a lot of solid information - no idea of cost and no web site to find out more. Just a phone number which will...

Re: Windows Update 1903 - right-click in task bar not working

Thank you for the extra info. The problem is now fixed. It was not NCH Express Zip File Compression. It was a 'Memeo LIfe Agent Explorer Extension' a legacy from when I used Memeo software for backing up. I followed the instructions here: https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/fix-slow-right-click-crash...

Thanks, mc2fool. I downloaded ShellExView but not sure what to do next. When I click on the links you gave to previous threads I get the message "No posts exist inside this topic for the selected time frame.".

Windows Update 1903 - right-click in task bar not working

Since this update I find that right-clicking on items on the task bar, does not have any effect. E.g.I have the Firefox icon/short-cut pinned to the task bar. Left-clicking on it opens Firefox as expected; right-clicking shows the list of other actions including web sites to go to directly, but then...

Re: Monitor on the blink

Oh dear! Today when I turned on, the monitor really was on the blink - it flashes on and off. Swapped for another almost identical monitor and all OK. so I am going to get a new one. The old one was one of the early flat screen ones, so the new one will have a wider screen. Nothing lasts forever.

Re: Monitor on the blink

TY for all your replies. It was not a backlight problem but: Does your monitor get turned off at the mains? Before anything else I would suggest disconnecting both power and display cables and retrying. RC Yes!! I did that and it seems to have fixed the problem, including the initial buzz. So thank ...

Thank you for all the replies to my original query. My query was prompted by the fact that that money aggregator I use, Internet Banking Plus is to close. This has been a very practical and useful way to log in to bank, credit card and building society accounts as it sores the user names and passwor...
