Re: Murray International - dog or not?

A couple of observations on MYI:

a) In recent times, it has gone from a premium to a small discount;
b) 16% is invested in fixed interest.

I'm getting interested now it's at a discount and yielding 4.5%.

Re: income progress

Carillion, Provident Financial and Pearson all combined to produce a fall in my dividend income YTD. This is even with dividends reinvested. That said, I think of it as reversion to mean. I have had several years of very good annual income increases.

Dod,

Hopefully your break will be one that heals with time rather than being permanent, and you'll come back refreshed.

That looks like 0.25% vs 0.18%. Not worth the hassle, I think.

Re: diversification into collectives

I have diversified into the seven vanguard regional ETF's (VUSA, VUKE, VMID, VAPX, VERX, VJPN, VFEM). It would have been more simple just to have bought VWRL as I don't think the average investor can successfully predict which region to over or underweight. Yes I agree. I don't think I can predict ...

diversification into collectives

My HYP is my main retirement provision and consists of the usual shares that we are familiar with. This year I decided to put future investment only into collectives for these reasons: a) reduce some management time for my successors; b) reduce the UK-specific risk; c) reduce company-specific risk. ...

Re: Murray and/or Monks?

Recent under-performance of MYI may partly be due to it slipping recently into discount territory. The AIC website is currently showing a discount of 0.5% for MYI, whereas it's been at a premium for the past couple of years. Now has a yield of 4.7%, quite tempting. Relatively highly geared at 11%, t...

Lootman,

Agree with your list. I would add that to become seriously rich by your own actions, one needs to be a big risk-taker.

Dod, to be clear, what I said was: "increasing my exposure to global growth and (in particular) technology ," and: "but still maintaining as broad a spread as possible in terms of sectors and geographically". Sounds like a whole of market, worldwide tracker fund of some descript...

Re: SSE PLC Results

Apologies if someone has already posted this earlier in the thread. I thought this from Hargreaves Lansdown rather succinctly sums it up: "The split hasn't changed our fundamental view of SSE. It needs to improve cash flows if it's to shake off nagging concerns over the stability of the dividen...

Re: SSE PLC Results

All interesting comments. If the borrowing has been directed towards capex/investment, then it doesn't appear very successful as FCF has not improved. I appreciate that FCF is cashflow from operations minus capex, but eventually with successful investment you should get a reversal. In others words, ...

When calculating % in each sector, should the denominator in that calculation exclude or include investment trusts/collectives? In my calculations I include it, but I haven't given it any thought before. Depends if you see your portfolio as one large one or lots of small ones. Just thinking it thro...

How did you avoid blowing the budget on travel costs? A lot of nights away from home, and a lot of flights... Re: IAN's HYP - 7 Year Itch

Great post, thanks. It broadly accords with the rather less comprehensive stats for my 15 year LTBH HYP. My IRR works out at 9-10% depending on the state of the market when I do the calculation. My total dividend income rises significantly each year but this is with reinvested dividends and a little...
