Re: Dividend-oriented ITs with low/no dividend payout

If you take the low divi rather than no divi route then would Nick Train managed Finsbury (FGT) fit the bill, good quality divi paying equities but the lowest divi payout in the AIC sector on account of the emphasis being put on growth?

Pagans demand return of church buildings

Pagans demand return of church buildings 'stolen' 1,300 years ago - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/08/27/pagans-demand-return-church-buildings-stolen-1300-years-ago/ Nice bit of self-publicity by the Odinists, although the historian at the end of the article is correct to state that the Briti...

Re: Clarity needed

So, I'm asking for some clarity. Is my reaction over the top, and tainted by my general dislike of her before she announced she was pregnant? I've tried to think how I would react if a friend was doing this, but am unable to split out the emotional involvement. Any views most appreciated. If I'm be...

i can hardly understand a word of it . it has to be much simpler for me , and the many who are much dimmer than i am. i ask the question " whats it all about?". simple answer - i dont know . nor does anyone else. Well I think the basis of the arguments are fairly obvious and well understo...

Atheists thought immoral, even by fellow atheists

Atheists thought immoral, even by fellow atheists - https://phys.org/news/2017-08-atheists-thought-immoral-fellow.html Study here - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41562-017-0151 Its conclusion states: Religions underpin large-scale intragroup cooperation 3 , but they also promote distrust of non-b...

Re: Car polish - is it worth it?

Perhaps there are a few half-decent hand car wash outfits out there. Some even try and sell themselves as instant detailing services now I've noticed, but they tend to have the same problems that running your car through an automatic car was has. At first you barely notice, and if you have an old ca...

A great set of pictures in the Mail today taken by Germans after the evacuation (the Mail always seems to do this type of stuff really well) - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4731202/Allied-POWs-captured-evacuation-Dunkirk.html

Re: Anti-virus problems

I've heard lots of problem reports with Comodo, it also tends to do relatively badly in the independent AV tests - https://www.av-test.org/en/ I've always used the Windows own firewall without any problems, but for AV I did like Avast (free version) a lot, and never had a problem with it, it seemed ...

Dod, this answers some of your questions about why they may not be as bright - http://www.wowlighting.co.uk/advice-on-choosing-leds.htm I have read somewhere before (but can't find it now) that there are often compatibility problems with LED's and GU10 halogens in particular around the fittings (it ...

Re: Confession is good for the soul?

Some sort of confession is common in many religions, even the more extreme Calvinist Protestants do it, it is just that they cut out the middle man (priest) and go straight to God to confess their sins. Needless to say the CofE half-way house (between the Catholic Church and Protestantism) does it i...

Yep, agree with the laminated glass suggestion, this gives some useful info on why it is used for soundproofing - https://thesoundproofwindows.co.uk/ultimate-guide-soundproof-windows-doors/ - (I found the suggestion of also having two different thicknesses of glass in the sealed unit to be interesti...

Re: Car polish - is it worth it?

Yes, a mild filler polish (anything harsher I would leave to the pro detailers) followed by a wax makes a very big difference. The key is prep (just like with decorating) but it needn't take up too long. Twice a year (spring and autumn) I clay the paintwork after an initial cleaning wash and use a c...

Re: Portfolio Pruning Advice

I actually don't think you necessarily have too m any IT's at all, nor would I worry about overlap, in fact sometimes overlap is preferred. It is why, after all, Luni's old IT baskets on Motley Fool had huge levels of overlap for things like UK centered income and that was based on a number of facto...

Re: What motivates you to manage/invest your money well?

I invest because, having lived through the 70’s with inflation hitting 27%, I realise that cash is not a safe alternative. There is no safe way of preserving your purchasing power so sensible investing is IMO less risky than any other alternative. I also know from experience that asset managers are...

Re: AI - passive active, or active passive?

Thanks for the replies, I'm glad I'm not the only one who is a bit confuddled by the terminology here! In relation to 'smart beta' I'm not keen on the name myself (selective index would have perhaps have been better for most of them?), but there is a difference between them and general index tracker...

I can't work out whether this new 'active' fund run by 'artificial intelligence' is active at all, surely it is more like a 'smart beta' passive? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/investing/funds/invest-fund-manager-has-zero-emotion/?WT.mc_id=e_DM474154&WT.tsrc=email&etype=Edi_Inv_New&utm_sourc...

Re: Caledonia Investments

Yep, own it myself, a plodder but that's no bad thing. A good buy in terms of its discount to NAV (13.7 % on AIC), but bad for its far too high charges (1.09%). I would add in Brunner to the same type of good family linked trust mix given they are now a global trust with a good manager and the same ...
