Re: British Aerospace

Personally too much accounting risk for me. Long term contracting, imagine difficult to audit and lots of valuation judgement. I try and steer away from these type of investments. Admittedly different to the support services sector but for me a similar accounting risk.

Re: Greene King

The interesting thing with Greene King is it's personal to a lot of folk as we all know their pubs and may have eaten/drunk in them. So the example (locally) at least in Suffolk, is I know of 2 of their pubs in Ipswich which they've lost over £200/week of income (I'd add it's a large group of us wh...

Re: British American Tobacco Results

I'm going to be honest here admitting something I hadn't fully thought through. In my mind I was viewing a 5 percent increase as effectively being a 2.5% reduction in the dividends I will receive forever on that purchase, which seemed intuitively significant. Hopefully my maths is right ;) However ...

Re: British American Tobacco Results

The tobacco shares are very sensitive to any news, good or bad it would seem. To Walrus I would say, if he thinks BAT was good enough at £27 it is still surely good enough at say £31. The difference in yield must be very modest and the dividend is not I think in any danger. Maybe wait a day or for ...

Re: OLTB's HYP - Sold United Utilities.

This morning I sold my holding in United Utilities (UU.) within my HYP. I have been worried about what the future may hold for UU. and yes, I understand that is an unknown and it may well go on to churn out RPI increasing dividends year after year. I do not wish to be worried though and therefore I...

Re: OLTB's HYP - Sold United Utilities.

In the overall utilities sector I hold United Utilities, SSE PLC, and National Grid, in roughly equal weighting. I shall continue to do so, as I’m happy in my ignorance of the future, for good or bad, of any of them. One can try to be to clever for ones own, and our HYPs health imho. Ian. I'm in a ...

Re: lack of dividends

Agreed, all feels a bit tumbleweed in these parts. I have my thoughts on why but that's OT. Being a supposedly hands off investing strategy, I’m surprised we find so much to talk about. Maybe that’s how it should be. Less is more. Ian. Agreed, not as interesting though :) Though I do have more time...

Re: lack of dividends

Apropos of nothing much, on a dull day for news: This quote was dated 2 March 2019. A Saturday so it is not really surprising that it is a dull day for news, However, like Arb, dividends have been a bit thin in the last month or so. Might even be glad of my cash reserves. Re: RNS announcements posted on this board.

I value your posts, definitely including the RNS. If you stop posting the minor ones but keep to the major announcements of dividends, results etc, that sounds like a reasonable compromise, but why people can't just skip the ones they are not interested in, beats me. Remember: Those that can do, th...

Re: On the Dividend Letter's demise

Anyway.... there is a fundamental difference to me, apples and oranges, between a 15 share HYP purchased as a lump and immediately drawn upon - the original concept- and an HYP constructed brick by brick over many years in anticipation of retirement. The former, Dorisianly unmanaged, could with luc...
