Re: Confucius say

From my student days I remember:

Confucious, He say when you wake up....
Lying face down
With pain in head
Carpet in mouth
Bottles on head

..you know was bloody good party!

Re: "Source of wealth information" requested

I spoke to Barclays Smart Investor customer services and the guy I spoke to said he thought I needed printouts of all of my contract notes for the last 20 years. I hope he didn't know what he was talking about. I did have a look at my Barclays account to see if I could download the history of trans...

Re: Danny Baker fired by BBC over royal baby chimp tweet

I thought it was just very funny and was perplexed at the 'racist' tag at first. How on earth is it racist? Surely this speaks volumes about the people who first started squeaking about it. I'm not a great watcher of the Royals so may be a bit out of date, but I have never, ever thought for one mill...

Re: Woman gives birth.

Is Harrison in honour of Harrison Ford, or because Archie is Harri's son? Probably a George Harrison fan and Wodehouse's 'The indiscretions of Archie'? Mountbatten for obvious reasons and Windsor because it's better than Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and also the name of a soup. Steve PS If you're a fan of Jee...

More generally it's almost impossible to completely hide yourself unless you go off grid and have no electronic gadgets. Look at the efforts Netflix et al have put into successfully breaking VPN's to maintain their region blocking, and what the Chinese Govt. have done with their great firewall. TOR...

Re: How is this happening? Paranoid about tracking?

As for your phone knowing it's in Malta, that'll be because it picks up a Maltese partner of your telecoms provider. Doesn't it send you a text message on arrival, telling you what is/isn't included in your tariff while your there, and any costs for calls, texts and data? Yes, I got the standard me...

So it's been announced:

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

I still think that Rodney or Dwayne would have been better.

Steve

PS Isn't Archie just short for Archibald?

Well I'm delighted. All war, hunger, pestilence and need in the world have disappeared. At least you'd think so from watching the news. ;) Ah, but let's wait too see what the tabloids say. The Midwife has to be an illegal immigrant, the baby was born exactly 100 years after some Royal child they ne...

How is this happening? Paranoid about tracking?

I'm in Malta for a very short visit, using a tablet I've had for about 2 years and Melita WiFi. A link takes me to Google Play Store. One of the first thing I see is a nice list of Apps I've installed before. But these were very old Apps, Chess, Sudoku etc that I installed on an old phone many years...

That's right I had forgotten the expression 'unaccompanied minor'. Some air hostess as they were called were given the job of looking after them. No harm came of any of them. In those it was unthinkable anyway. Dod We discovered the hard way that airlines all have their own rules. At 14, our younge...

Re: "Source of wealth information" requested

Only slightly tongue-in-cheek, but since the Financial crisis and given the fact that the banks seem to be always in court, I'd be rather more concerned about 'their' source of wealth and 'their' money laundering.

Hi, I got rid of my fathers and a year later he was subject to a push past theft at home. They got £50 - £100 cash but were upset there was no cards. To withdraw money he cashed a cheque in his branch. When that closed either I or my brother drove him to the nearest branch. I thought contactless so...

Vodafone admits finding hidden security flaws in Huawei equipment. See my response on the USA-China thread. It is a rubbish story. Slarti Having used and still use Vodafone in the UK, Italy, Malta and Tanzania (Vodacom) I wouldn't believe a single word they say. But they have good coverage. No prob...

Presumably these days the lenses are all produced by an expensive machine - put the blanks in, dial in the prescription and press a button? The days of craftsmen hand grinding must be long gone. Hence it is simply a marketing/profitability issue to charge more for the various options? I have had va...

Reminds of the difference between a Kangaroo and a Kangaroot. One's an Australian marsupial. The other's a Geordie stuck in a lift. Years ago, my Brummie friend invited me to a conference all about spice. I was really interested and love trying new flavours in my food. Two boring hours learning all ...

Re: Empty aluminium beer cans in the "brown bag" please.

You can just rip the plastic bag open when you are at the till and leave it behind, that way it becomes the supermarkets problem - if more people did that Im sure they would start to revise the packaging they use. That's actually a really brilliant idea! I'm already refusing to buy fruit and vegeta...

Thinking about it, you're absolutely right that this is generally what the postmen say. Though in many decades, I've never known a problem to occur. But even if it's an escaped lunatic out to get you, he'll probably still answer "Royal Mail" rather than "Axe-wielding homicidal maniac....

Samos, greenest and best island for lack of crowds and fantastic walking. Great bus service. Lots of history. Quaint genuine village life. Trouble might be getting there. Ino Village Hotel our favourite. Another vote for Samos, the first Greek island I ever visited, first in 1986 just after uni, th...

Re: Degiro best/easiest option? Safety and other questions

I've been looking around this board (very helpful!) and other places for a good way to invest some of my savings that are sitting in the UK and earning very little interest. Since most of the cool robo-investors and fintech apps aren't available to non residents, it seems to basically come down to ...
