Has this one gone over my head?
Moderation of the site is carried out by unpaid volunteers.
But isn't it also for each individual to accept responsibility for supporting moderation and to handle their own typo's and spelling errors?

Re: Handling of typos and spelling errors.
I think it the height of arrogance for a mod to interfere with a post, unrequested b y the poster and without permission.
There have been ructions on another site I use over this. A new mod, a retired English teacher, started correcting 'obvious' spelling errors. This rapidly progressed to grammar corrections too. Then one day he altered a post to say "what the poster obviously meant to write", but the poster didn't and the mod's alteration subtly reversed the whole meaning of the post. The poster had a hissy fit over it and rudely demanded his original post be restored which said mod refused to do, unless requested in a civil manner. The (valuable and knowledgeable) poster refused to be civil over it, fell out very publicly with the mod and never posted again. The mod quite bombastically insisted there was nothing wrong with him altering people's posts and continued to do so for a while, but eventually the weight of opposition from site members led the rest of Team Mod to insist he stop doing it which he has, by and large.
Point being, mods editing posts without first clearing it with the poster can be a slippery slope best not embarked upon. And clearing it with the OP first would turn it into a less-than-trivial task, I'd imagine.

Re: Handling of typos and spelling errors.
I put "other" because I am not particularly bothered either way. If mods see a silly spelling or typo, paricularly one which leads to confusion, let them correct if they wish. But mods are volunteers, and I wouldn't like to think of them taking on another chore.
Besides, if my old mistake of writing pendant instead of pedant had been corrected, we wouldn't have had a joke which run for a while at my expense, and a little bit of light would have been absent.

Re: Handling of typos and spelling errors.
I'd be solidly against this. Publicly documented edits to bring posts into conformance with the rules is barely acceptable, the only extension of this I might agree with is corrections of typos in the Subject line duly marked up to show the alteration -- only because those typos are very visible, popping up repeatedly over the life of the thread and becoming rather tedious.
Very important to acknowledge any edits IMV. Silent corrections as suggested by the OP are devoid of accountability, so absolutely unacceptable.

Yes agreed
You CAN edit a post for a short time after posting it,
perhaps that can be extended
in fact, why is it restricted anyway

I expect it is to prevent a kind of rewriting-of-history. I reckon it probably helps with the quality of posts because the user knows he/she/it will have to stand by what has been said. C.pje16 wrote:in fact, why is it restricted anyway

Ah ok I hadn't thought about that, very good point
How about being able to edit for 12 hours, you should have spotted your typo by then

Re: Handling of typos and spelling errors.
I would say it should be restricted to obvious spelling mistakes in the title of the post only. These do become rather tedious. On the other hand this could be dealt with by the OP requesting that the title be amended I suspose. Summary alteration should not become widespread though.

A couple of things.
Why do some posts get an editing message and date stamp while others can be amended without getting an editing message ?
Also, I am fully aware that I am not as eloquent or fluent as the majority of posters, I'm not sure I can improve on this but I enjoy the debate. I can try harder with ensuring spelling is accurate. The spell checking function is invaluable for me, is it switched on for everyone? I used it just now! Must try harder.

If I spell a word wrongly it gets underlined in red. Right click on the word and you get optional spellings. Click on the correct spelling.
I cannot see a function to switch this on and off, maybe its on for everyone.

I'm using Firefox
let me see if that has a setting somewhere
Edit:
is has, an it's on but doesn't seem to work

Re: Handling of typos and spelling errors.
Sounds like a feature of your particular computer's software to me. C.scotview wrote:pje16 wrote:scotview wrote:The spell checking function is invaluable for me, is it switched on for everyone? I used it just now! Must try harder.

[Edit: On Windows search for "Spelling" - there is a setting to turn this on.]

Re: Handling of typos and spelling errors.
When editing a message there is a field at the bottom called Reason for editing this post: When this is filled out then the text is appended to the post, when not, it isn't. That's my experience anyway. C.scotview wrote:Why do some posts get an editing message and date stamp while others can be amended without getting an editing message ?
