I'm going to have to win a heck of a lot of prizes next month then, the last draw this tax year. I know they're not taxable but that's when I review all my investments and see how much I've lost in the year. :(

The current odds of winning a £25 prize are 1:24500
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/premium-bonds

So ignoring the jackpot prizes the average return on £100,000 per annum should be 100000 x 12 x 25 / 24500
That gives £1,224.49

Given that it is tax free that is not bad (if you have average luck!)

Just seen on the PB FB page that one of the million quid winners this month only bought their PBs (7.5K) in january... must be their first draw!

Well they bought £7000 in January, of their total holding of £7500. But near enough.

April Prizes now up https://www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

I was wrong earlier in the thread but on a fiscal year basis my total "winnings" were £425 for 2017-18, as against £600 in 2016-17 (full holdings).

Onwards and upwards, given the previously mentioned Annual prize fund interest rate increase ...

Only £425 on a full holding for me this year. Spouse had a £500 prize though, so will have done rather better.

Still nothing for me - £18000 worth of bonds held for well over a year and not won a thing. Very disappointing.

In the 7 months my wife and I have had £70,000, we've won 5 months at £75, one month at £100 and one month at £50.

So averaging £75, which is almost exactly the stated 1.4% return. Surprised how consistent it is.

In fact, 7 months does not statistically allow you to have any kind of feel for how consistent the returns are.

Over the last few decades, we have seen large variations from year to year in our very sizeable PBs holdings returns, best year 7.62%(2006, Mrs was the jammy dodger that year of course), worse(2017 as it happens), a miserable 0.32% overall, I was 6 months on the trot without a win, but of course, as usual Mrs Oz did better but still pathetic in 2017.

Over the whole long period our XIRR on PBs is lagging RPI by 0.68%, ie a rubbish investment.

Good job our other investments(stock market, a few small businesses, now being 'sold' as we seriously and increasingly disperse resources towards the brood , agricultural land) have delivered the goods. Our house price has done well too, but I always exclude it from our overall investments returns estimate out of habit.

However, like countless older holders I suppose, we shall continue to hold PBs, habit plus second line of defense behind immediate needs suitable cash pot, and of course one of these days ERNIE/Lady Luck might remember us big time...

Hence why I said it was a surprise. It has been consistent, but on such a short timescale I would have expected more variation. So I'm well aware it's a coincidence.

Just heard. Won 2 x £25 prizes. Still a bad return but I live in hope.

I have £5,725 which I have accumulated since 2015. In that time I have had 9 x £25 and 1 x £500 prizes, not a bad return of 14.5% on a staggered investment of £5k and am thinking I will top up with another £5k soon. Seems better than sticking cash in a fixed interest account.
I know its nonsense but I felt that staging my investments gave me a better chance :D
MM
PS - we got 2x£25 prizes in March

That must explain why I have such difficulties explaining much of the Internet.

You've done marginally better than me, PD. On my £50k holding I received prizes totalling £400 for the last fiscal year, a pretty lousy return but I suppose it's better than losing it and when I pop my clogs NS&I will, I believe, release it to pay tax due on my estate before probate is granted, a huge consolation.

I'm not sure you can count on that see https://www.nsandi.com/files/published_ ... s-form.pdf
We will let you know if we need a Grant of Representation (also known as a Grant of Probate or Grant of Letters of Administration)
once we receive your completed form. We may ask for this if the customer’s total NS&I savings are £5,000 or over. The Director of
Savings also reserves the right to request a Grant of Representation for a claim of any value.
