Power of Attorney: Pre-Registering with Banks?

Didn't know if this was a DAK, legal or banking question.

I've just sat in on a meeting with my parents' financial advisor/private banker/wealth manager type person so there will be a few questions heading in this direction shortly.

I already have a power of attorney registered, the original is held by a solicitor.
OPG sent me a single page notification that it was set up and stating where the LPA is held.

The advisor person said that I ought to pre-register this with the bank, that I didn't need the full document, just the bit of paper that was sent to me from the OPG

I dug out one of my statements for each of the banks as proof of ID and set off down the high street.

Bank 1
Set up an appointment
I handed over my binder, she said that was all I needed

Bank 2
Setting up the appointment, I showed them the binder
Bank: You need the full LPA we need to see the embossings
Me: Your private banker person said that I only needed to bring this in
Bank: No, you need the full LPA [asks someone else who agrees that they need the full LPA] Do you still want the appointment?
Me: Er, no.

I've not tried bank 3 yet, I wasn't sure if I was given duff info in the first place. I could try again at the central branch of bank 2 at the same time.

I went to branches in a posh area, but the advisor must deal with older folk on a daily basis, so she must know what she's talking about.
Can anyone shed some light. Is doing this a good idea, pointless? Do I need a copy of the full LPA?

You will need the official stamped copy, not just a copy. In my experience with Lloyds in the UK anyway.

In my experience most institutions will want sight of either the original or a certified copy of the original.

Yep, thanks. I was being a bit dippy. I'll collect it from the solicitors.

Yes, you need a full copy of the 13 FPA pages, each page signed by the solicitor, so they will charge. I had about 4 copies made, as you need them for banks, insurance cos, share selling etc. But they normally return the copy within a week or so. Fyi banks can authorise you to manage the account online, and provide you with a bank card, if thats what you need.

the copy can be certified by the doner as long as you get the copys certified whilst the doner is of sound mind

Just an update.

Seems that the solicitor had sent it to my dad, so the stuff my dad had in the original meeting was the stuff that I needed.

I'll get him to self-certify a few copies before he sends the stuff to me.

Setting up online banking would be brilliant.
