I have an entry "Bank credit Dividend" for today which is unexpected - roughly £300.

How can I find out who sent it please?

Clicking on the statement doesn't do anything.

What shares do you hold, and in what form?

A quick scan of dividenddata.co.uk should help

Nationwide have replied by secure message "the BACS payment was in your name and sent by DIVIDEND".

That solves that then!

We live and learn.

Not surprised at all, Nationwide really are a useless shower of time wasters.

Can you find out the sort code and account number whence the payment came?

I'd have thought even Nationwide would be able to find and provide you with this pretty basic information.

Armed with it, perhaps a Google search might throw something up, and if as a Brucie bonus they could give you the account name, you'd be home and dry.

Yes, you've got to laugh, with all this money laundering / security stuff...

"Can you tell me who sent me this money?"

"No, we can't tell you that, it's a secret"

If the payment really was sent by BACS then the descriptor won't have been made by Nationwide, but by the originator (or if there was any manual intervention along the way possibly someone in the chain). Nationwide aren't a clearer themselves, they used to use Barclays. I don't know if they still do, it's been a very long time since I had any involvement in the clearing system.

Yes it's possible for Nationwide, on your behalf, to make a credit clearing enquiry going back along the chain to determine the originator, but frankly for a retail customer, and for small amounts you are relying on someone's goodwill and time to get this done.

Nationwide's systems are renowned for not passing on received information to their customers.

For example, I send money from Nationwide, with a payment reference "From Budget ac"
The payment reference gets sent with other information in a FP/BACS message to Nationwide.
The credit appears on my Nationwide statement as "Bank Credit P Soldi" (i.e. Bank Credit "name of sending account holder")
Any other receiving bank and it would have been shown as one of
"From Budget ac", "P Soldi From Budget ac" or "From Budget ac P Soldi"

I would suggest that you ask Nationwide to tell you what the payment reference was. If they tell you "DIVIDEND", I would use the magic words.
"That is not the payment reference, If you don't know how to find the payment reference, it's not a problem, pass me onto someone who can, or failing that put me through to your complaints department, but please do not try to fob me off with incorrect information."

When I used to get snotty in the way that PS is advocating, my dear wife used to say to me 'Do not alienate the only person who can help you'. She would usually take over the case and using a deal of charm, or as we say, 'the gift of the gab', she usually got the matter sorted.

Redrow paid a 20.5p a share dividend on 13 November 2019. Have you got 1500 shares in them?

Wow, are you serious? Nationwide gave it to you, why don't you just ask them, rather than a bulletin board? As others have said if they don't give a straight answer, escalate!
