Greene King - share price up 6% today

A nice surprise capital appreciation for my Greene King holding today (it's been in the doldrums over the last six months or so) but not too sure why it's moved. Still paying a high yield so happy to top up when funds available. Perhaps people are drinking more beer in this lovely weather.

I am not sure what is going on today but on 12 April 2018 there was a Pre-Close Trading Statement that resulted in caused a 20% increase in price to around 578.00p in just a few days. I know because two days previously I had purchased a good-sized holding for 468.26p. It then declined a bit, maybe some profit-taking going on but the last couple of weeks it has started to rise back towards the high point.

The Final Results come out on the 29 June

Just arrived home and agree it was a very nice surprise, must be due to the improving weather.

Looked at the short position but no change there for a few days. Maybe it will take one or two days to be reported, or a RNS re an increased holding.

Wholeheartedly agree (I did mention yield in my OP ) and I think that a forecast yield of 5.7% (according to Digital Look) is pretty decent.

While income is the main concern on this board once invested the income is what it is ie the dividends paid.

Should you be forced to sell for whatever reason it is preferable for the price to be in your favour.

Should the price rise reducing the yield to an unacceptable level you can sell and invest in a share to increase your income.

I guess I am only teaching my betters to suck eggs.

No - as you say, it's all about income, which is not the same thing as yield. What has really happened (or rather not happened!) is that there's been no change to past income, and no news about future income.

To be slightly nitpicking:

To those looking to buy, the prospective yield has gone down
To those looking to sell, the prospective capital has gone up
To those looking to hold, nothing to see here

As a holder, I'm happy for the price rise, mainly because it moves the yield towards a more sensible (by which I mean unremarkable vs the market) level. There's still a way to go, but every little helps. Future sustainable dividend growth is more likely if the company is doing well, which should be reflected in a rising share price.

Were the price to continue to fall, we'd all be worrying about possible dividend cuts!
