Regulars to this board will be more than familiar with my fickleness (Pickering) when it comes to deciding my chosen share to top up/purchase. I did mention before that my chosen share for this month is British American Tobacco, and that is still the case. That will happen on this Thursday, and take my BATS holdings up to being about 3% in capital value of my HYP. BATS sits alongside Imperial Brands in my HYP, so my exposure to tobacco holdings will be about 6.6% in capital value terms, of my 32 share HYP. For those not in the know regarding my HYP, here's a link to show my holdings before this transaction. viewtopic.php?f=15&t=11247&start=20

Oh dear... maybe some Pickering is in order? :D

I understand that this morning one of the analyst companies uprated the target price for IMB to £31 so BATS might be hanging on the coat tails of that news as well.

Cheers, OLTB.

I think the tobacco companies are very undervalued, almost by definition. The yield is high, particularly for Imperial, and the dividend is not I think under threat. Were I you Ian, I would go ahead and buy. You will never time the market except by luck. I am not buying but that is because I have enough already.

And why not indeed. The yield has changed from 5.29% to 5.13%... in the scheme of things in a few years time it won't matter ( but it is darn annoying  )

Thank you very much for your input guys. I'm holding firm with my top up of my BATS holdings tomorrow. As Dod says, you can't time the market, and I agree, so I'm not going to waste any more of my time, or yours, worrying about it. To pick up BATS at over a 5% yield is a bonus in itself I think. BATS finished up 2.8% today, but that in itself is immaterial for us HYPers. It's all about the income after all. ;)

Cheers,

Ian.

I wonder if moves to make cannabis legal have had any effect.

"Players Please" and send you doolally. Actually I think that word relates to Calcutta airport, whose name I cannot remember accurately. Daolali perhaps?

Dum Dum was the name of the airport at Calcutta, just like Kai Tak was at Hong Kong.

Happy memories.

Of course you are right. I think the other place was the first village on the way into the city. It was before you got to the tannery.

'early 20th century: originally doolally tap, Indian army slang, from Deolali (the name of a town with a military sanatorium and a transit camp) + Urdu tap ‘fever’.'

And I flew into HK's Kai Tak airport once. It felt rather like landing a jetliner on an Oxford Street where every building is a high-rise, so that right before touch-down it felt like you could see individual faces in buildings looking down at you as you descended below.
