Raptors September top-up
On the Strategy Board, I posted that based on the FTSE350 yields and my criteria I would buy Greene King. At the time I did not see me having enough to be in the "market". Recent dividend income was higher than I expected (nice when that happens).
My HYPTUSS showed this:-
Top 3 were discounted due to their Yield (I have set myself an upper limit recently). VOD and BT were out as if I top-up either of them my sector limit would be breached (not by a lot but enough). MKS has been one of those shares that have been up there for a top-up but when I get the "cash" something else has "risen" to the top of the pile. So going back to my post on Strategy I re-run the numbers (Kiloran had updated the stepone spreadsheet for the end of August) and GNK was up there at 6.8%.
After buying GNK to compliment MARS my portfolio now has 21 shares.
By sector:-
My forecast yield is unchanged at 6.22%. I am happy with that.

Which do you prefer? Speckled Hen or Banks's?

Hedge your bets between them and buy both. I have done the same with RDSB and BP. Etc.

Greene King - FTSE Small Cap yields 6.9% better 5 and 10 year dividend growth, no cuts in over a decade
Marstons FTSE 250 yields 8.4% cut in 2008 and 2009 and have not yet recovered dividend to pre cut level.
details pulled from https://www.dividenddata.co.uk
I hold both and have seen ever increasing yields by declining sp over the past few years.

If you are not that bothered about Marstons High Yield being "too high" then go for it. I would have gone for them but decided to set an upper limit on Yield, thus no longer chasing the "yield" oblivious to why that yield maybe high. Carillion etal last year being the driver for me. Mind you if I was still building then I probably would still be chasing the yield....
When I was contemplating buying into the "leisure" area I could not decide between the 2 and went for the yield (MARS was slighltly better at the time) was a mistake as soon realised I live in a Greene King area rather than Marstons, so the Marstons card has never been used. Will now contact my brokers to see about getting the GNK card (the pub in the village is now a Greene King franchise and serves "food").
Good luck, Raptor.

That's kind of where I was leaning towards.

You're welcome Darka, as I'm not an expert, I favour spreading the risk in any given sector if at all possible, and viable. For instance, I hold both of the oilies I mentioned, GlaxoSmithKline alongside AstraZeneca, BHP Billiton with Rio Tinto, and British American Tobacco with Imperial Brands. Doing so helps me sleep at night, mostly. In the sector you're mulling over I only hold Marston's, but have held Greene King in the past, but never the two of them side by side.
Ian.
