Marston's - YEAR END TRADING UPDATE

#172695

Postby idpickering » October 10th, 2018, 7:06 am

Strong trading during the World Cup and warm summer weather contributed to our achieving record revenue and underlying profit before tax for the financial year. Group turnover was up 15% to over £1.1bn and we anticipate reporting underlying profit before tax of around £104 million (2017: £100.1 million) with higher operating profits in each of our trading segments offset by higher interest charges.

Total pub sales increased 3.2%, including like-for-like sales growth of 0.6% and the contribution from our pub expansion programme. In the most recent 10 weeks, like-for-like sales were up 1.6%.

Taverns: our wet-led Taverns pubs performed strongly with managed and franchised like-for-like sales growth of 3.8% including growth of 3.8% in the last 10 weeks. This good performance from our community pub estate was boosted by the World Cup and warm summer weather, although trading has been consistently strong throughout the year. Like-for-like profit in our leased estate is around 2% up.

SP down 5 percent. Margins under pressure, interest costs up. Not sure whether to continue adding here.

Looks like the market was expecting better figures? The sp had been ticking up nicely over the last few weeks as well.

Recovering slightly and now down 2.8%. I didn't think the announcement was that bad. In fact the main worry for me is the company's minnow size at only £650m cap. I mentioned in my IDP October Top Up thread that I was considering topping up my MARS holdings next month. I only bought into the MARS story last October, so it's early days. I'm showing a 8% fall in capital value terms currently. I remind myself that I bought MARS for the high yield, and well covered dividend. That is still the case, and I still think they're a great HYP share. My plan to top up next month still stands. In fact I might even top up this month along with my planned Vodafone top up.

I'm very pleased with the update.

I was wondering if the new Chairman would be shaking things up at this point and I was prepared for turbulence. However the update seems to be steady as she goes with the business growing slightly and profits up slightly.

I’m happy too, so much so that I have set up my account to top up both VOD and MARS, as I mentioned I might do earlier in this thread. These will take place on 22 Oct 18.

I'd say that's at least herring size. Minnow size is when you're worth more than the entire company! ;-)

Lol Gengulphus! Well the herring has gone sprat today with MARs sp down 2.6% as I type. Greene King is favoured and is up 2%. My HYP has done well today in capital value terms. The FTSE100 is down 1.2%, and I'm down 0.2%! Mind you, such thinking is off topic here, and I do try to ignore the market noise anyway. It's about the income after all.

Forget the sp, the results suggest the dividend is safe for another year, that's all that really matters.

Quite right funduffer, and something we should remember hereabouts.

Damn. Wish I could feel secure on a single year's projections.

I will confess to plopping a dollop into Marstons yesterday.

Thanks for sharing that. Despite the current downward trend in the markets having thrown loads of juicy looking HYP shares into my sights, my planned top up of MARS is still going to happen. That will probably be my last top up of MARS for a while.

I do hope you wiped thoroughly afterwards... I heard moist flushable wipes are good.

I've often wanted to buy into MARS - but I hold a big chunk of GNK - but something has never smelled right about Marstons's but I can't put my finger on what.
